Next-gen BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe breaks cover
KUALA LUMPUR: Last year, BMW introduced the new-generation 4 Series two-door coupe and now it pulled the wraps off the second-generation of its four-door iteration i.e. 4 Series Gran Coupe. The new model gets cosmetic tweaks inside and out, tech upgrades, and the engine choices available with the two-door model.
In terms of design, the new BMW 4 Gran Coupe is not much of a surprise as it looks nearly identical to the i4 EV that we have already seen. Included in the few differences are of course the big controversial kidney grille in place of blocked-off grille in the i4, real exhaust tips, and a unique diffuser. Other key exterior highlights are stretched LED headlights and tail lights, and tapered roofline. With the M440i xDrive, BMW also offers an exclusive Cerium Grey paintwork, high-gloss black elements, a rear spoiler, and M aerodynamic 18-inch bi-color wheels.
Dimensionally, the coupe is bigger than its predecessor which means more passenger space in the cabin, but if we talk about the luggage area. It measures relatively less.
The new 4 Series Gran Coupe interior design looks much identical to the two-door model, with seating for five passengers as the obvious difference. Standard cabin features include
- BMW Live Cockpit with iDrive 7 and navigation
- 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility
- BMW Digital Key
- Power-adjustable front seats
- Moonroof
- Sensatec-trimmed dashboard and an M steering wheel (exclusive for M440i)
As for safety, the new 4 Series Gran Coupe specs sheet features a number of advanced-driver aids, including Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Speed Limit Assist, Frontal-collision warning, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot detection, City Collision Mitigation, Rear-cross traffic alert, and rear collision preparation.
Coming to the oily bits, here also the four-door model mimics the standard coupe. The base model carries a 2.0-litre turbo four-pot mill good for making a maximum power of 255 hp and a peak torque of 400 Nm. At the same time, the M440i xDrive uses a 3.0-litre turbo six-cylinder engine alongside a 48-volt starter-generator. Combinedly, they produce 382 hp and 499 Nm of torque. Both mills are mated to the same eight-speed automatic transmission.
Pricing for the new BMW 4 Gran Coupe for the base variant starts at £40,465 (RM 236,191). Its launch is slated for November in the global markets, so for Malaysia, we can expect the arrival next year.
