New MINI Cooper S range introduced in Malaysia; the MINI 3 Door, MINI 5 Door, & Mini Convertible: Full Details

KUALA LUMPUR: It’s been a long time since MINI Malaysia introduced a new vehicle in the country. It seems like the automaker was busy updating its price list, launching MINI eShop and MINIMISE, The Great British Deal promo, to name a few. But now the automaker is back in full force with the launch of several models, including the MINI Cooper S lineup that includes three cars and the new MINI Electric. Wow, that seems like a treat!

Hans de Visser, BMW Group Malaysia managing director on MINI S range arrival said, “Designed to be the perfect driving companion, the MINI 3 Door, 5 Door and MINI Convertible were some of our best-selling models in 2020 – having delivered just over 240 units combined, despite the slowdown in the automotive industry last year.”

Here we will be discussing the new MINI Cooper S range with the new Electric model elaborated in a separate story. So, let’s get started -

MINI Cooper S range design

All three models benefit from a few progressive and comprehensive standard design updates. While all new offerings showcase the instantly recognizable MINI style, the exterior design theme of all three cars have undergone a slight facelift. The revisions include - a new front design, redesigned rear apron, light-alloy wheels, and side scuttles.

The highlight however being the new front hexagon grille that gives the new MINI Cooper S range a strong foot forward. The front bumper carries a few surprises as well, in the form of newly integrated air curtains and new High Gloss Black inner fog lamp housing. Further enhancing the car’s look is the Piano Black Exterior finishing seen on the door handles and exhaust tailpipes. At the rear, we see a new bumper with new rear fog lamps.

MINI Cooper S range interior

The cabin is as good and revised as the exterior, or shall we say it's even better. All the three MINI Cooper S range models - the MINI 3 Door, 5 Door, and Convertible benefit from a new multi-functional steering wheel with controls flushed to the surface with a Piano Black finish. The cockpit decor has also been revised with new and large designs, thus giving the cabin a modern look while still maintaining MINI's signature style.

Notable cabin inclusions are as follows -

• Larger 8.8-inch display with Navigation and Apple CarPaly support
• New 5.0-inch instrument cluster
• New MINI Ambient Light with six colour options

MINI Cooper S range engine configuration

The three MINI Cooper S range models are powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder MINI TwinPower Turbo mill that pumps out a maximum power of 192 hp and a peak torque of 280 Nm. The power is sent to the wheels via a 7-speed Dual Clutch Sports Automatic gearbox and the new MINIs attain a top speed of 235 kmph with the Convertible propelling 230 kmph.

As for the century sprint, the 3 Door takes 6.7 seconds, 5 Door 6.8 seconds and Convertible 7.1 seconds.

MINI Cooper S range safety specs

The MINI Cooper S 3 Door, 5 Door, and Convertible benefits from the Driving Assistant suite of features that includes approach control warning with light city braking function, digital high-beam assistant, person warning with light city braking function, and speed limit information.

Lane departure warning and Parking Assistant are also part of the kit, with the former operating between 70 to 210 kmph.
