Mini reveals two new performance cars - Cooper JCW hatch and Convertible

KUALA LUMPUR:  After introducing two fully-electric models - Cooper JCW hatch and Aceman JCW just last week, BMW-owned Mini has now pulled the wraps off the two petrol-powered JCW models. The latest models are the Mini John Cooper Works 2 Door and Mini John Cooper Works Convertible.

The new performance Mini cars offer “impressive driving characteristics and legendary go-kart feeling” and continue the legacy of racing legend John Cooper.

Let’s know the new Mini JCW models in detail - 

Drivetrain

As the latest models run on petrol, we can find an updated 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine under their skin. The said mill delivers a maximum power of 231 hp and a peak torque of 380 Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a new eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission replacing the seven-speed DCT.

Performance

In terms of performance, the Mini John Cooper Works 2 Door accelerates from zero to 100 kmph in 6.1 seconds while the Mini John Cooper Works Convertible takes 6.4 seconds for the same task. The top speed is capped at 250 kmph for the fixed roof model and 245 kmph for the open-top variant.

The brand has always been driven by a passion for top performance. This year, a new Mini John Cooper Works 2 Door prototype won its class at the Nürburgring 24-hour race.

Suspension and braking 

Both cars are equipped with high-performance brakes, featuring eye-catching Chili Red brake callipers that enhance their sporty appearance. The suspension duties are managed by a bespoke sports setup fine-tuned for better cornering stability, reduced body roll, and a smoother driving experience at high speeds. 

Exterior 

The new Mini JCW models feature a bold, octagonal front grille in glossy black with the three-colour JCW logo and wide air vents. Adding to their sporty looks are striking LED headlights and the optional bonnet stripes. The red air inlets are also provided for engine cooling and better aerodynamics.

At the rear lies an aerodynamic spoiler, a black diffuser, and a central tailpipe that highlights the vehicle’s power. Both vehicles come with a choice of exclusive 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels.

The convertible model comes with a soft top that opens in 18 seconds, offering a fun open-air drive. The soft top can also be opened partway like a sliding roof, and a wind deflector helps reduce noise while driving.

Colours

The new Mini JCW cars are available in 11 body colours, with a contrasting roof and mirror caps in Chili Red or Jet Black. The convertible version has an exclusive Copper Grey finish.

Interior 

The interior boasts a clean red-and-black colour scheme with JCW sports seats covered in black synthetic leather and multicoloured fabric on the shoulders and red stitching. The dashboard features a black-and-red knitted pattern, reflecting the brand’s racing heritage. The JCW sports steering wheel comes with shift paddles and a textile detail at the six o'clock position.

The feature kit comprises a 9.4-inch OLED display, a wireless charging pad, a Harman Kardon sound system, a Driving Assistant Plus, a MINI Navigation system that uses 3D and Augmented Reality, and a Parking Assistant Plus.

Price

The Mini John Cooper Works 2 Door price begins at USD 38,200 (approx. RM 166k) while the Mini John Cooper Works Convertible costs USD 43,700 (approx. RM 190k) in the US.
