MINI Cooper SE Convertible debuts in Europe; limited to 999 units

KUALA LUMPUR: Mini introduced the electric Cooper SE Convertible concept back in July and now after almost eight months, the idea has been converted into a small series of production models. Yes, the BMW-owned luxury marque has pulled the wraps off the road-ready MINI Cooper SE Convertible in the European market.

Touted as the world’s first emission-free premium convertible in the category, the drop-top Cooper SE Electric will be offered in a limited quantity of 999 units. The production will be carried out in the Netherlands alongside the conventional Mini Convertible and the sales will begin in April at a price of £52,500 (approximately equal to RM 278,572).

"Three years ago we launched the all-electric MINI Cooper SE, and today one in five MINI sold in Europe is an all-electric MINI. This success has spurred us to implement the small series of the MINI Cooper SE Convertible within only a few months. I'm delighted that we can offer 999 MINI customers an extraordinary and exclusive open-air go-kart feeling," says Stefanie Wurst, Head of the MINI Brand.

Here are the key highlights of the MINI Cooper SE Convertible -

• The Convertible EV is powered by the same electric drivetrain and battery found on the 3-door hatchback version. The said system kicks out a maximum power of 184 horsepower and a peak torque of 270 Nm
• While Mini did not reveal the capacity of the battery pack, it does mention the maximum range figure, which is 201 km on the WLTP test cycle
• Performance-wise, the drop-top Mini EV can run from standstill to 100 kmph in 8.2 seconds

• Featuring a Union Jack design, the soft top of the small German EV can be opened or closed at speeds of up to 30 kmph
• The car rides on distinctive 17-inch Electric Power Spoke cast alloy rims that are made of 100% secondary aluminium
• Two available colours options are White Silver or Enigmatic Black
• Among the key interior appointments are Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel, sports seats, head-up display, piano-black trim, Harmon Kardon stereo, rear-view camera, ambient lighting, wireless phone charging, and keyless go
