MG4 EV coming to Malaysia; here are 5 things you need to know

After much anticipation, MG is finally back in Malaysia, but this time with electric vehicles. The automaker recently gave a sneak peek of its upcoming electric models, the MG4 and ZS, marking a big step towards eco-friendly transportation in Malaysia. In this article, we will take a closer look at the MG4 EV, helping prospective buyers make an informed decision about their next electric vehicle purchase.

SAIC Motor Malaysia has started accepting bookings for the upcoming MG4. It will be available in four variants: Standard, Lux, Lux Extended, and XPOWER, estimated to be priced as follows:

5 things to know about the upcoming MG4 EV

Based on SAIC’s Modular Scalable Platform

The MG4 EV is the brand’s model which underpins the new MSP (Modular Scalable Platform) developed by SAIC Motor, MG’s parent company. With its intelligent engineering, this platform offers a plethora of benefits such as enhanced interior space, reduced vehicle weight, and advanced safety features. As a result, drivers can enjoy a more expansive cabin area within the same external dimensions, as well as improved efficiency and handling due to the vehicle's reduced weight.

Flattest battery developed to date

The MG4 Electric is equipped with an ultra-compact, advanced One-Pack Battery that has been tested with the most stringent European and International battery standards. It stands out as the flattest battery developed to date, measuring just 110 mm in height, making it the thinnest battery in its class. The battery capacities span from 51kWh to 77kWh in Malaysia, offering a WLTP-claimed driving range between 350 km to 520 km on a single charge.

MG PILOT

Safety remains a top priority for MG, and with the MG4 EV, the company offers an impressive suite of driver assistance systems called MG Pilot. It includes the following safety bits - 

• Active Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Bicycle Detection: Automatically applies the brakes in emergencies to prevent collisions with pedestrians or cyclists
• Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning System: Helps keep the vehicle within its lane and alerts the driver if they unintentionally drift out of their lane
• Traffic Jam Assist: Assists with steering, acceleration, and braking in heavy traffic situations, reducing driver stress

• Intelligent Speed Limit Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition: Recognizes and displays speed limits from road signs, helping drivers adhere to speed limits
• Intelligent High Beam Assist: Automatically switches between high and low beams to optimise visibility without dazzling other drivers
• Adaptive Cruise Control: Maintains a set speed and distance from vehicles ahead, automatically adjusting speed as needed
• Driver Attention Alert: Monitors driver behaviour and provides alerts if signs of drowsiness or distraction are detected
• Blind Spot Detection: Alerts the driver to vehicles in their blind spots, reducing the risk of collisions during lane changes
• Lane Change Assist: Assists the driver in safely changing lanes by monitoring surrounding traffic and providing alerts if it's unsafe to do so
• Rear Cross Traffic Alert: Warns the driver of approaching vehicles when reversing out of parking spaces
• Door Opening Warning: Alerts occupants if it's unsafe to open the doors due to approaching traffic

MG iSMART 

The EV also comes standard with the brand’s innovative MG iSMART technology that seamlessly integrates car, internet, and user communication to deliver a seamless and intuitive driving experience. The voice command system gets activated with a simple "Hello MG" and allows the driver to effortlessly control various functions.

MG iSMART offers a wide range of capabilities, including:

• Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity
• Set schedule charging
• Range visualisation and charging point
• Find your vehicle
• Vehicle status diagnosis such as fuel level, battery condition or brake condition, 
• Route planner
• Remote vehicle control functionalities like locking/unlocking
• Remote adjustment of air conditioning settings
• Notify the suspected car theft in case of unusual vehicle movements

MG4 XPOWER - A high-performance variant

The MG4 XPOWER is a high-performance variant of the electric hatchback that exclusively comes equipped with a dual motor setup generating 435 hp and 600 Nm and a smart all-wheel-drive system delivering improved traction, stability, and enhanced safety with active braking on the inside wheels. 

Also part of the kit is a launch control feature, which promises an enhanced sporty driving experience and delivers acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph in just 3.8 seconds. The EV also excels in braking performance, stopping from 100 to 0 kmph in just 33.9 metres, thanks to its upgraded wheels, brake discs, and callipers. 

The 10.25-inch colour touchscreen of the top-spec MG4 also offers an exclusive track mode display featuring data analysing vehicle performance, power distribution, speed/time, G-Force, steering angle, and throttle.
