Meet the all-new 2023 BMW X1 M35i performance SUV

KUALA LUMPUR: Globally revealed in June last year, the all-new third-generation BMW X1 gets a new high-performance variant in the form of the X1 M35i xDrive. The new German hot SUV packs a mighty 2.0-litre drivetrain and improved hardware setup and looks more aggressive, which sets it apart from the standard X1.

Powering the new X1 trim is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot gasoline mill that’s been given the M treatment. It benefits from an upgraded turbocharger, a more robust crankshaft, new bearing shells and caps, and an optimised oil supply system. 

With these upgrades in place, the engine generates a maximum power of 312 horsepower and a peak torque of 400 Nm. Compared to the standard model, the power shows an impressive bump of 71 hp. The power is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission mated to an xDrive system and a mechanical limited-slip differential setup.

In terms of performance, the car runs from zero to 96 kmph in 5.2 seconds only and hits an electronically limited top speed of 250 kmph.

Among the car’s exterior design tweaks are - 

• A new blacked-out grille with an M logo

• Large front air inlets

• Back M door mirrors

• Modified side skirts

• More prominent roof spoiler

• Aggressive rear faux-diffuser

• Two pairs of twin openings for the M-specific exhaust system

• 19-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels (20-inch units wrapped with sportier tyres as an option)

Inside the cabin, the most important upgrade can be observed in the form of the new BMW iDrive 9 with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9. It is to be noted that the X1 M35i is one of BMW’s first models to get this latest system. It features more intuitive functions and offers more digital services via the ConnectedDrive store.

The exclusive highlights include - an M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, an Alcantara-trimmed instrument cluster, M-specific graphics on the display, and M pedals. The seats are upholstered in black Sensatec/Alcantara. 

Buyers can also choose the M Sport package Pro that comprises - 

• M high-gloss Shadowline exterior trim

• M lights Shadowline

• M Sport braking system with red callipers

• M Sport seats 

• M seat belts

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is set to hit the US market this year in October at a starting price of USD 50,895 (approx RM 237,595), which includes destination and handling charges.

BMW X1 in Malaysia

As of now, the all-new third-gen BMW X1 is only available in electric form in Malaysia, called the iX1. The EV is powered by a dual-motor setup generating 313 hp of power and 494 Nm of peak torque. The motors are fed by a 64.7 kWh battery pack, offering a range of 440 km. It retails for RM 272,370 (on the road without insurance).
