Lamborghini aims to go green; first electric supercar by 2030

KUALA LUMPUR: Joining the other automakers in electric transition, the Italian sports car maker Lamborghini floated its electrification roadmap that leads the brand's towards its first-ever fully-electric model by 2030. 

While detailing the electrification strategy, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said: “Lamborghini’s electrification plan is a newly-plotted course, necessary in the context of a radically changing world, where we want to make our contribution by continuing to reduce environmental impact through concrete projects. Our response is a plan with a 360-degree approach, encompassing our products and our Sant’Agata Bolognese location, taking us towards a more sustainable future while always remaining faithful to our DNA.”

The Lamborghini EV roadmap includes the three different phases:

First phase: (2021-2022): Before diving deeper into the electrified future, the company will celebrate its long history of combustion engines by presenting two new V12 models.

Second phase (by the end of 2024): The second phase, termed as the hybrid transition will bring the company’s first hybrid series production car on the floor in 2023. Following that, we will see the gas-electric hybrid versions of the whole lineup by 2024. This means PHEV models of the Aventador, Huracán, Urus as well as limited production Sián roadster will be introduced within the next three years.

For this electric transition, Lamborghini is ready to put in around 1.5 billion Euros over four years i.e. the company's largest investment so far. The strategy involves the introduction of different new technologies, including the use of lightweight carbon fibre that helps in reducing weight. During this transition, the Italian automaker hopes to reduce carbon emissions to half by 2025. 

Third phase (second half of the decade): For this phase, the company has planned to launch its first fully electric Lamborghini with the vision of a fourth model in the future. “The technological innovation in this phase will be directed towards ensuring remarkable performance, and positioning the upcoming EV at the top of its segment,” says the automaker. 

Well, this is the company’s whole plan for electrification which we can say does not come out of the blue. Before this, we have witnessed the brand’s interest in electric vehicles back in 2017 when it unveiled the Terzo Millennio concept. It was a static concept using supercapacitors in place of standard lithium-ion batteries.
