Honda and Takata sued over road accident

Kuala Lumpur: The month of July saw an accident in the country where a pregnant Malaysian woman was killed in a collision in her 2003 Honda City. This car contained a defective Takata-made airbag inflater which has been the centre of a huge recall since the first issue surfaced back in 2008. As a result of this incident, Honda Motor Co and Japanese parts maker Takata Corp are being sued in the United States.

Law Suk Leh, 42, lost her life as a result of a metal fragmant from the damaged airbag sliced through her neck in this incident. The vehicle was driving just at the speed of 30 kmph when another drive hit her at a crossing. Her father allegedly filed a lawsuit which stated that after the mother's death the daughter was delivered who also passed away three days later.

Although the accident took place in Malaysia, still the lawsuit is being filed in the States because this “defective inflater” was produced at Georgia's Takata plant (now disfunctioned). Further research told that there was a malfunctioned conveyer at the factory as a result of which propellant tablets were exposed to moisture. According to Honda, such much moisture can cause the explosives to become highly unstable and expand with a massive force in case of collision.

Following this sad incidence, Honda Malaysia has issued a recall for 15,734 local units to replace the driver-side airbags- the affected models involve 15612 units of 2003-04 Honda City as well as 122 units of 2004 Honda Jazz.
