Here is the one-off fully electric MINI Cooper SE by Paul Smith

KUALA LUMPUR: As one can suspect from the title, renowned fashion designers Paul Smith and MINI came together to create a one-off Cooper SE model, called the MINI Strip. It is not the first time the two have collaborated, their relation dates back to 1997.

Coming to the present-day output, a fully electric MINI Cooper SE which is based on the concept of “Simplicity, Transparency, Sustainability”. It’s basically a stripped-down version of the 3-Door Cooper SE with most of its panels and trims replaced with sustainable and recycled material. Overall it’s a stylish, nature approved Cooper.

Paul Smit about his latest creation said, “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to rethink the iconic MINI. I know and love the existing car, but by respecting the past and looking to the future we have created something very special”. He further added, “I feel very privileged that the MINI team has given me the confidence and freedom to think laterally about the approach to the design of the car. Together I think we have created something truly unique, by going back to basics, reducing things down and stripping the car.”

Oliver Heilmer, head of MINI Design explained the latest car as “For me, the MINI STRIP shows in an impressive way that MINI and Paul Smith share the same bold way of thinking about the future in terms of innovation and design – and together we create more. Paul asked essential questions right at the start of the design process with his non-automotive and therefore fresh perspective. We are proud to have developed such a strong character statement together.”

The exterior has been left unpainted and one can clearly see the galvanised steel panel with grinding marks from the factory. A thin paint layer has been applied to protect the car from corrosion. All this has been done to express the car as a functional and robust daily companion.

What makes it an environment-friendly car?

• The car’s wheel arch panels, front & rear splitters, and side skirts are 3D painted from recycled plastic
• The yellow spots visible on the exterior body are intentionally exposed screws, they can be easily removed and recycled at the end of the car’s life cycle
• The front grille and large panoramic roof are made of Recycled Perspex, it is a light and transparent material exposing the car’s bare structure
• The interior too like the exterior is stripped down with all the metal replaced by recycled material
• In place of a standard dashboard, there is a one-piece transparent mould and instead of a regular infotainment system there is a centre dial designed to fit the driver’s smartphone
• All the switches (start/stop, power window functions) can be found in one place, i.e. just below in centre rack
• The seats have been reupholstered with knitted fabric
• The floor mats are made up of recycled rubber
• Recycled cork along with knitted fabric can be found on dashboard surface and door trim offer noise insulation
• The steering wheel is made of plain aluminium and is covered in the same tape used in bicycle handlebars
• The airbag is covered in mesh covers, and with the near-naked interior even the window airbags are visible
• The pull handles on the door are made from climbing rope
