5 things to know about the upcoming Chery Omoda 5

After a long wait, Chery has finally announced the official date for its comeback in Malaysia. That's right, the Chinese automaker will re-enter the local market on July 6 with the launch of two models - Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro. Both will be locally assembled in Kulim, Kedah. In today’s story, we will be discussing the five important things about one of the upcoming Chery cars i.e. Omoda 5. So, let’s get started.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When will Chery Omoda 5 launch in Malaysia?

The Chery Omoda 5 launch in Malaysia will be held on July 6, 2023.
  • What are the key highlights of the upcoming Chery Omoda 5?

The Omoda 5 is part of the brand’s Omoda series and features the "Art in Motion" design language. Set to arrive in a single powertrain option in Malaysia, the SUV will rival against the Proton X50, Honda HR-V, and Toyota Corolla Cross.
  • Part of the Omoda series

The Omoda 5 is part of the brand’s Omoda series. The “Omoda” is a combination of two words - "O" and "Moda". The "O" represents "brand new" while "Moda" means a fashion trend. The Omoda 5 is the first model under this new global product series and will be followed by three models in the future, which are - Omoda 3, Omoda 7, and Omoda 9. Not only that, the SUV is also the first crossover SUV model of the "Chery 4.0" era. It is on sale in several markets, including Australia, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, and South Africa.

    "Art in Motion" design language

The SUV features Chery's newly developed "Art in Motion" design language which blends cutting-edge tech with dynamic styling and creates an eye-catching appearance. The front design of the SUV is borderless and sports a diamond matrix grille and split headlights with T-shaped LED daytime running lights.

The SUV also features smooth and powerful lines extending from the A-pillar to the rear where we can find urban-like flowing LED tail lights. Adding to the trendy aesthetics are 18-inch contrast colour sports wheels.

According to Chery, the SUV is designed with a 'golden ratio of Pythagoras' with a height-width ratio equal to 0.8677.

Initially come in a single powertrain

Chery Malaysia will initially offer the Omoda 5 in a single powertrain option i.e. a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine which is capable of generating a maximum power of 154 hp and a peak torque of 230 Nm. The engine will come paired with a CVT gearbox (with nine virtual ratios) sending power to the front wheels. This is Chery's in-house engine, which will get a 10-year or 1 million km warranty in Malaysia.

Apart from that, the Chinese automaker also has plans to introduce the fully electric version of the SUV in Malaysia. However, the arrival timeline of the Omoda 5 EV depends on the RHD development of the model.

    5-star Euro NCAP rating

The Omoda 5 received a five-star rating in the Euro NCAP testing conducted in 2022. The agency conducted the test for a left-hand-drive Omoda 5, however, results are valid for both the LHD and RHD versions. The SUV scored 86% in adult occupant protection, 78% in child occupant protection, 84% in pedestrian protection, and 64% in safety assist systems.

Parts of the SUV’s advanced safety net are an autonomous emergency braking system, lane support system, camera & digital mapping-based speed limit warning, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, and in-car driver fatigue system.

Rival the likes of popular B-segment SUVs

The family-size Omoda 5 SUV measures 4,400 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,585 mm in height, and spans a 2,630 mm long wheelbase. These measurements make it fall in the already crowded B-SUV space in Malaysia, which is dominated by SUVs like the Proton X50, Honda HR-V, and Toyota Corolla Cross.

What do you think about the upcoming Chery Omoda 5? Does it have the potential to drive the success of the Chery brand in Malaysia? Let us know in the comments.
