2024 GWM Tank 300 Malaysia off-road first impressions - Can it really handle the hard stuff?

This is GWM's first ICE vehicle in Malaysia and would be rigorously tested at the M4TREC, Malaysia's city center proving ground for off-road vehicles.

The Tank 300 was recently launched in Malaysia with a price tag of RM250,000. From the onset it had captivated us with its design. However, the real curiosity lies in its performance behind the wheel. This off-road SUV, with over 400,000 units sold globally, promises a thrilling driving experience, does it live up to the expectations?

    Tank 300 Malaysia

Driving the Tank 300 on an off-road course provided some much-needed answers about its price tag. The M4TREC's versatile terrain accommodates a range of off-road vehicles, from mild to hardcore challenges. For the Tank 300 test, a mild to hard course was set, despite the vehicle being equipped with Michelin Primacy tires, designed for comfort and longevity. Adding to the challenge was the rainy weather, making the test even more exciting.

The Tank 300 boasts a unique build with ladder frame construction, a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering 220PS and 380Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 4WD system featuring traditional 4Low, 4High, and 2High settings. It includes a transfer case with low-range gearing and locking differentials, a rarity in modern off-road vehicles, even among some of Land Rover's latest models.

Modern tech enhances its off-road capabilities, including a transparent chassis function that uses cameras to display the underside of the car, crawl control (essentially cruise control for off-road environments), and Tank Turn Assist, which helps achieve a sharper turning circle.

But do these features work, or are they just gimmicks? Before testing, we believed that even without these features, the traditional 4WD system, 224mm ground clearance, and differential locks would suffice. The water crossing obstacle was tackled first. With a 34-degree departure angle, 23.1-degree ramp angle, and 33-degree approach angle, the Tank 300 handled the man-made water crossing effortlessly, surviving thanks to its 700mm wading depth.

According to M4TREC’s instructors, their inspection of the engine bay revealed that the high placement of the electronics and intake was reassuring. They believe that the 700mm wading depth rating is likely conservative. Even with the heavy rain potentially increasing; the water depth beyond 700mm, they remained confident in the Tank 300’s ability to handle the conditions without issue. Three days the Tank 300 had to complete this particular obstacle and all of them were still working by the end of it all.

Next, we tested the Crawl Control, designed to maintain a steady speed off-road by automatically managing power and brakes. On a leaning, uneven surface with randomly placed boulders, the feature allowed us to focus solely on steering, making the Tank 300 handle the obstacle smoothly. It basically gave the wheels more power when it needed to, and slowed it down when it needed to, providing a smooth momentum to complete the obstacle.

We then tried the Tank Turn Assist where it performed impressively, reducing the turning circle by locking the rear brakes. However, it's best suited for loose surfaces and not for areas with many tree roots, as it puts considerable force on the braking wheel. GWM did say it’s only usable on gravel surfaces, so even they know its limitations and don’t recommend this feature be engaged on the tarmac.

The traction control also responded quickly on uneven surfaces, maintaining stability and allowing the suspension to work effectively. Speaking of suspension, its articulation is good, keeping the body pretty much steady with the suspension doing the flexing. The transparent chassis function, displayed on the 12.3" infotainment system, aided in a nerve-wracking log crossing, ensuring precise tire placement.

Finally, we faced a steep hill descent and ascent. The hill descent control performed flawlessly, gradually bringing us down the steep incline. Climbing back up tested the traction system and torque, and the Tank 300's 380Nm of torque at 1,800 rpm proved more than capable.

The final test was a drive on regular roads around M4TREC. The suspension proved to be cushy, though not the softest, offering a commendable level of comfort and impressive NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) control. The steering feel can be set to be light and heavy according in correspondent to its driving modes which will come in handy.

After spending some time with the Tank 300, we revisited the question: is the RM250,000 price tag justified? Although it’s not cheap, our answer is a resounding yes. The plethora of off-roading features and the premium interior justify GWM's asking price. It might not be the cheapest 4WD vehicle, but the value is undeniable.

    Tank 300

The Tank 300 is packed with features to tackle off-road challenges. It completed the M4TREC relatively well, considering the wet surfaces on the day and doing it with non off-road tyres. For those who really want to use it on less traveled paths, perhaps a change to all terrain tyres would be better as it will give added traction.

It boasts a luxurious cabin with Nappa leather, a 9-speaker Infinity audio system, wireless charging, and dual 12.3" infotainment screens. These impressive elements make it a good all-around standout choice.

    Tank 300

While I can’t tell you to buy it, I wouldn't mind owning one myself. It fits my lifestyle perfectly, with frequent travels to new places for work, navigating various road conditions, and enjoying weekend camping trips. With the Tank 300, I can comfortably handle my work travels with all the modern amenities and rely on its robust off-roading capabilities to get me unstuck on adventurous weekends.
