KUALA LUMPUR: After a long wait, BMW has finally unveiled the 8th generation 5 Series which is joined by a new fully-electric variant, the i5 sedan. The latter joins the automaker’s ever-expanding EV line-up and will surely make a huge impact in the segment.

    Dimensions

    The all-new 5 Series has grown over its predecessor substantially. The sedan now measures 5,060 mm in length (+97mm), 1,900 mm in width (+32 mm), and 1,515 mm in height (+36 mm). The wheelbase now stretches to 2,995 mm (+20 mm).

    Variants

    The fully-electric i5 is offered in two variants, the entry-level i5 eDrive40 and the range-topping i5 M60 xDrive. While the former features a single-motor setup making 340 hp and 430 Nm of torque, the range-topping trim comes with a twin-motor all-wheel drive set-up making 590 hp and up to 820 Nm (in Sport mode).

    The 5 Series, on the other hand, will be offered in the variants, the 520i, 520d RWD, and 520d xDrive AWD.

    Performance

    With launch control activated, the electric 5 Series sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in just 3.8 seconds and attains a top speed of 230 kmph.

    Battery

    The all-new i5 features the brand’s CLAR platform wherein the battery is located in the underbody with a capacity of 81.2 kWh. It offers a range of 516 km and 582 km for the i5 M60 xDrive and eDrive40, respectively.

    The new Max Range function helps boost the driving range by up to 25% by compromising on the power and comfort features.

    Charging

    While an onboard 11 kW AC charger is standard, there is also a DC fast charging support of up to 205 kW, meaning a 10 to 80% SoC in around 30 minutes.

    Engine

    The new 5 Series is powered by two 4-cylinder mild-hybrid engines (one petrol & one diesel), across all three trims.

    Suspension

    Both the 5 Series and the i5 feature the same suspension setup which includes double wishbones in front and a five-link setup at the rear.

    Infotainment

    The setup includes -

    • Dual-widescreen curved display and the BMW Intelligent
    • Personal Assistant (latest BMW Operating System 8.5)
    • In-car gaming

    Driver assistance kit

    • Optional Driving Assistant Professional (with Steering and Lane
    • Control Assist and Distance Control)
    • Highway Assistant (as per market regulations permit)
    • Active Lane Change Assistant
    • Parking Assistant with Reverse Assist
