The 2022 Volvo XC90 B5 Inscription Plus is powered by a mild-hybrid powertrain combining a 2.0-litre Drive-E turbocharged four-cyl gasoline engine, an electric motor acting as an integrated starter generator, and a lithium-ion battery pack. While introducing the new model, the company’s Managing Director Charles Frump stated, "We are excited to strengthen our XC90 line-up with the introduction of our latest mild hybrid. This new variant allows our customers the flexibility to choose the powertrain that best suits their needs."
Already on offer with the new Volvo XC60, the B5 mild-hybrid powertrain combines a 2.0-litre Drive-E turbocharged four-cyl gasoline engine, an electric motor acting as an integrated starter generator, and a lithium-ion battery pack. Under braking, the motor recuperates kinetic energy and supports the mill by offering maximum power of 14 PS and a peak torque of 40 Nm.
Together, the system generates 249 PS between 5,400 to 5,700 rpm and 350 Nm from 1,800 to 4,800 rpm. The power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Volvo says that this mild-hybrid setup not only offers smoother start/stop operation but also an improved fuel economy. The latter is rated at 8.2 litres per 100 km.
In terms of performance, the XC90 powered by this mild-hybrid setup runs from naught to 100 kmph in 7.9 seconds before hitting a top speed of 180 kmph.
As far as the design is concerned, the XC90 B5 Inscription Plus looks pretty much identical to the existing T8 Inscription Plus. It features an Inscription exterior styling package, full LED headlamps with Active High Beam, LED daytime running lights, 20-inch 10-spoke black diamond-cut alloy wheels, and a panoramic sunroof.
The colour palette comprises four options - Denim Blue, Onyx Black, Pebble Grey, and Crystal White. The first three are metallic while the last one has a pearl finish.
The interior is outfitted with a head-up display, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 9.0-inch Sensus Connect infotainment unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless phone charger, four-zone climate control with vents on second and third rows, 1,400-watt Bowers & Wilkins sound system with 19 speakers and electric front seats with memory function.
Complementing these tech appointments is an Orrefors crystal gear lever, diamond-cut control knobs, illuminated tread plates, and Nappa leather upholstery.
