2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee debuts with 4xe plug-in hybrid mill

KUALA LUMPUR: Jeep introduced the all-new Grand Cherokee L earlier this year and now here comes its updated two-row version with a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the first time. While the styling of the two models remains almost similar with a few differences, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is around a foot shorter in length and has a five-inch shorter wheelbase as compared to the three-row model. Also, joining the lineup is an off-road focussed Trailhawk variant of the smaller SUV. Let’s discuss the models in detail.

In terms of exterior styling, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee differentiates itself from the L version with some different trims and distinctive wheel designs. The rear fascia looks quite sleeker and features a black bar connecting the tail lights. 

The interior of the smaller SUV is just as luxurious as its L version. It gets a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a digital driver’s display, and an optional 10.25-inch interactive display for the front passenger. Included in the features list are 16-way power-adjustable front seats with seatback massage, ventilation, and heating function, connected car tech, a 19-speaker McIntosh audio system, multi-zone climate control, and in-vehicle wi-fi. 

As for safety, the updated Grand Cherokee comes with a host of radar and camera-based systems like a night vision camera, a 360-degree view camera, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, intersection collision assist, and park assist. There is also a level-2 active driving assist that offers automated driving.

Moving to the engine specifications, Jeep offers three choices in the US - a 3.6-litre V6 generating maximum power of 297 PS along with a peak torque of 352 Nm, a 5.7-litre V8 making 362 PS and 529 Nm, and the new 2-litre turbo hybrid that generates 381 PS and 637 Nm. The 4WD is available for all powertrains, however, the breadth of their off-roading potential varies according to the variant.

Not to forget, the 4xe hybrid powertrain also features a 17-kWh battery pack that offers an all-electric range of 40 km.

Speaking about the Trailhawk, the off-road focussed SUV boasts a more rugged bumper design, increased ground clearance, better approach and departure angles, and visible tow hooks.

The new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is slated to go on sale in the USA by the end of this year.
