2016 Nissan Leaf now touts a 250 Km range, owing to its larger battery
Kuala Lumpur: If you are looking for an EV which can get over 200 Km in a single charge before needing to recharge, then Nissan signature Leaf EV with its retooled Leaf might grab your attention. Nissan’s Leaf EV has been updated to boast a 25% more range thanks to a bigger 30 kwh new battery. The car now also features extra interior equipment, minor exterior enhancements and a roof-mounted aerial and a new bronze paint scheme.
Paul Willcox, Chairman of Nissan Europe announced that “The Leaf, the best-selling EV in the world, just got even better. And up to 250 km opens the world of EV to thousands of drivers across Europe who before just weren’t completely confident that an EV would work for them.”
The latest boost is because of the refined battery, which now boasts a figure of 30 kW, earlier it was 24 kW. The battery also sees the introduction of carbon, nitrogen and magnesium to the electrodes and a change in the cell layouts. Despite the added performance, the battery pack’s dimensions remain the same, and weight is up by just 21 kg.

Apart from the tweaked battery, Nissan has also added options for the pricier two models which includes NissanConnect EV that sorts remote connection, monitors battery charge, turns on the heat/air conditioning before you get inside and more. But, the company has not compromised with the power, no matter which model you pick, all three pack in a 80kW AC synchronous motor with 107 horsepower and 253 Nm of torque and that too with zero emissions. NissanConnect EV is an all new system which replaces the old Carwings setup. Apart from it, there is a revised navigation system, maintenance alert and car-finder facility. This all new system is built in with a charging map, which notifies the drivers wherever the charging points are available and which are occupied.
This system is also featured with a capacitive seven-inch touchscreen with a new user-friendly interface. The large touch screen displays all necessary info like charge status, pre-heat/cool cabin and lets the user zoom into maps and browse through menus by swiping over the screen like one would do on their smartphone.
The all new Nissan Leaf EV is priced at £24,490 (RM162,644) for the Acenta trim and £27,940 (RM185,556) for the Tekna variant in the UK. If you're after a new ride then you may go for the all new 30 kW battery, otherwise the earlier 24 kW Leaf variants (Visia, Acenta, and Tekna) will still be available.
