Mercedes-Benz S-Class Saloon: All you need to know

The highly awaited and speculated Mercedes-Benz S-Class Saloon has finally arrived in Malaysia. The car was first unveiled in Europe in 2017, yet its arrival in Malaysia was pushed back until now. It was launched along with the likes of C217 Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe, A217 Mercedes-Benz S 560 Cabriolet, and Mercedes-Maybach S 560 and S 650. Let us look at some of the top features of Mercedes-Benz S-Class Saloon.

Exteriors

The external design of the new S-class Saloon has not been changed much. You get a new radiator grille with three louvers instead of four. The bumper has also been changed with a more sporty design. The headlights are now Multibeam LED with Ultra Range high beam. The main beam will now be able to project a distance of 650 metres. On the rear, there are newly integrated tailpipe trim elements and LED lamps. The rear bumper has been restyled, while there is also a new diffuser. You also get a 20-inch AMG 10-spoke light-alloy wheels.

Interiors

Not a lot has changed on the inside from a design point of view. However, the interiors still maintain the elegance and richness that one experience inside the S-Class Saloon. You get a new three-spoke Nappa leather steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls. This new addition can highly improve the experience of the drive. There are new choices for upholstery which will enhance the aesthetics. The centre console acts as a command centre for a wide range of activities. Users may have mixed views about the centre console depending on the personal preferences.

Other interior features include electric panoramic sliding glass sunroof, high-gloss brown eucalyptus wood trim, ambient lighting, electrically adjustable front seats and rear seats, double cupholder, illuminated door sills, and AMG floor mats. There are 64 colour variations in the LED ambient lighting. Users also get climatised front & rear seats, independent climate control at the rear, head restraints, and hands-free access.

Performance

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Saloon is powered by a 6-Cylinder 3.0-litre Petrol Engine which can deliver 362 hp at up to 6,000 rpm and 500 Nm of torque at up to 4,000 rpm. The engine is mated with the 9G-Tronic automatic transmission. The new car is capable of going from zero to 100 kmph in 5.4 seconds. The top speed of the car remains 250 kmph which is same as the previous variant. There is a selective driving program that enables you to select between driving modes such as comfort, sport, sport+, and Individual.

Infotainment

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Saloon ensures that both the driver and passengers stay entertained during the drive. The COMAND Online and COMAND touchpad controller which were seen in the earlier models are still present in this variant. The rear seat is given an entertainment system linked to the 13-speaker Burmester surround system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support and smartphone integration are the new introductions. The latter is achieved using MB mirror link. Wireless charging for mobile devices is available for both front and rear seats. Remote control for COMAND is available, whereas the SplitView function is no longer provided.

Driving assistance & safety features

The Mercedes Benz S-Class Saloon is equipped with a range of safety features. The DISTRONIC Active Distance Assist is capable of regulating the distance between vehicles even at the speed of 210 kmph. There is an active speed limit assist to keep a tab on the speed. The active emergency stop assist swings into action if the driver does not respond to repeated warnings of the intelligent hands-off and places their hands on the wheel. You also get an active steering assist that produces additional torque to keep the vehicle in the centre of the lane.

The standard safety kit includes ten airbags with side rear and rear belt bags. The S-Class Saloon also comes with a PRE-SAFE Impulse feature. This feature reduces the risk of injury in the event of a collision by pulling back the occupant of the seat in a controlled manner and releasing in a controlled manner. The parking is made easy with Keyless-Go package, a 360-degree camera, and remote parking assist.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Saloon will be available in seven colour options – Cavansite Blue, Selenite Grey, Magnetite Black, Iridium Silver, Obsidian Black, Diamond White Bright, and Diamond Silver. Mercedes provides three interior colour options which are black, nut brown & black, and silk beige/espresso brown mix. Some of these are available with only a few exterior colours. The on-road price for the car is RM 699,888.
