2023 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro SUV: Buyer’s guide

The Chinese automaker, Chery finally made a comeback to Malaysia last week and it brings along two models, the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro SUVs to the local market. Also, in a recent press conference Chery International Vice President Shawn Xu confirmed that the Tiggo 7 Pro will be the ‘next model’ to enter the brand's lineup in the country.

Enough about Chery, it is time now to discuss its products in detail. In this article, our focus is on the Tiggo 8 Pro, with the Omoda 5 scheduled for a later post.

Compared to the X90 (one of its local rivals), the Tiggo 8 Pro is 108 mm shorter, 40 mm narrower, and its wheelbase is also 95 mm shorter. Thus, the Proton car has a bigger footprint compared to the Chinese model.

Platform

The Tiggo 8 Pro underpinned the Modern T1X platform which calls for a spacious cabin along with excellent geometric cross-country abilities like - exit angles, ground clearance, and entry angles.

 

Design

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro expresses a new standard of sleek sophistication; its modern and captivating exterior is a testament to its refined craftsmanship. All its elements help the SUV make a bold statement on the road and turn a lot of heads.

Also, part of the kit is a mobile phone wireless charging with reminder and two USB ports at the front and one USB & 1 Type C on the second row.

Convenience

Powertrain

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine generating a maximum power output of 256 hp along with a peak torque of 390 Nm. The power is transmitted to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. As for the drivetrain, the SUV offers front-wheel drive with multi-driving modes, including ECO, NORMAL, and SPORT.

The SUV offers a combined fuel economy of 13.51 kmpl.

Braking and Handling

Helping the SUV stop is Chery’s capable braking system which includes ventilated disc brakes at the front and rear disc brakes. The setup also includes an electric parking brake with auto hold which offers the driver more convenience and extra safety.

Further improving the SUV’s driving comfort and calm is its superb suspension setup which includes MacPherson Independent at the front and longitudinal towing-arm independent suspension at the rear.

Safety

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro reflects a new era of automotive technology which not only includes advanced information technology but also smart safety features which make the driving experience connected and protected on the road.

The setup includes leading guard-ring type 9 airbags providing complete protection along with a pre-tensioner seat belt and height adjustable, mechanical child safety lock, engine electronic anti-theft, body burglar alarm, rearview camera with dynamic guides, and reversing/front radar.

 

The impressive stuff is yet to be revealed, as the Tiggo 8 Pro comes with a bunch of driving and advanced driving assistant features.

The former includes - an anti-lock braking system, electronic brake force distribution, brake assistant system, brake override system, electronic stability program, traction control, hill descent control, hill-start assist control, tyre pressure monitoring system, and auto central locking door.

As for the ‘advanced’ safety stuff, the SUV comes with lane departure warning & lane keeping system, blind spot detection, door open warning, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control & integrated cruise assist, and front collision warning with vehicle identification, autonomous emergency braking, intelligent high-beam control headlamp, traffic sign recognition & traffic jam assist. Parking is aided by an all-around 540-degree HD panoramic camera.

Color options

All-new Chery Tiggo 8 Pro’s color options are limited to just two, namely Dark Black and Khaki White.

Price & competitors

The Tiggo 8 Pro retails for RM 159,800 which includes seven years or 150,000 km warranty song with five years of ‘free service’ (alternating, free labor). Also, part of the offering is a whopping 10-year or one million km engine warranty. The latter is limited to only the first 3000 customers, post which it will be offered for an additional amount of RM 2,000.

There are a bunch of cars the Tiggo 8 Pro goes up against in the Malaysian market, the list includes the Proton X90, Mazda CX-8, Toyota Innova Zenix, and 4th gen Kia Sorento.
