Yamaha FZ150i: Features explained

The Yamaha FZ150i was the bestselling 150cc motorcycle in the country in 2017 and it is not difficult to see why. With its powerful engine, 5-speed gearbox, and unique styling, it put forward a very good case for itself. First launched here in 2014, it received a few cosmetic upgrades in 2017. The FZ150i color options now include yellow, red, and blue. However, the competition here from Honda RS150R and the onslaught of Modenas’ Bajaj derived bikes can very soon tarnish that reputation like an ill-fortuned paint job. Here are all the features that claim to keep the bike fresh.

Yamaha FZ150i

Impressive engine

Yamaha FZ150i specifications list includes 149.8 cc four-valve SOHC power plant. The engine also features liquid cooling and fuel injection for good measure. The maximum power output of 16.3 hp at 8,500 rpm and peak torque output of 14.5 Nm at 7,500 rpm makes it quite powerful. The engine uses a 5-speed transmission. Yamaha has also given the engine good fuel economy of up to 38 kmpl. A 12-litre fuel tank gives it sufficient range too.

Unique styling

The Yamaha FZ150i has a distinct look that can be seen as the naked version of the YZF R15. Chief attributes hinting towards this are the Deltabox frame and the 5 spoke black alloy wheels from the 2nd gen YZF R15. The piece de resistance, however, is the sculpted and muscular looking fuel tank that ups its appeal with its dual tone paint scheme and its edgy shrouds. Lower down, the bike sports a sporty yet functional undercowl that protects the engine from splashes of mud and dirt. Moving back, the tail section is high and slim tying together the naked streetfighter look. The only criticism can be drawn to its outdated looking headlight with its high riding indicators. Still, there are many small details that go a long way in making this bike stand out. Special attention needs to be drawn to the inner rear fender, the tank graphics, aeroplane style fuel cap, the sporty rear seat and the long and slim silencer.

Advanced digital instrumentation

The FZ150i features an analoug tachometer along with a digital display for speedometer and fuel gauge. This classy piece of equipment surely raises the appeal of the bike further.

Competent chassis

Using the Deltabox frame, the FZ150i shows an inclination towards delivering superior handling prowess. The telescopic front suspension and the rear monoshock give it extra ability. The 17” wheels shod with grippy and wide 90/80 front and 120/70 rear tires make it very suitable for taking on corners with enthusiasm. The 117 kg dry weight means that it is very easy to shove the bike into corners and come out smiling from the other end.

Advanced security

Giving the bike some added security is the key shutter that comes with a two rack key that keeps the bike safe from thieves.

Impressive braking

Doing stopping duties on the Yamaha FZ150i are the single hydraulic disc brakes at front and rear. The front gets a dual piston while the rear gets a single piston caliper.

Comfortable ergonomics

While the bike may look aggressive, it is in essence a comfortable motorcycle with commuter friendly ergonomics. The seat height of 790 mm is usable by people of all heights. The handlebars are wide and high giving it a relaxed riding posture. The bike’s compact dimensions of 2009 mm (L) X 705 mm (W) X 1035 mm (H) make it easy to handle and weave around slow moving traffic.

Yamaha FZ150i graphic

The Yamaha FZ150i price of just around RM 8700 puts it within the firing range of many bikes. There are the upstarts like the Modenas Pulsar NS200. Then there are the sporty underbones like Yamaha’s own Y15ZR that end up being much cheaper than it. The bike might also appear to be outdated because of its styling. However, if the market trends are anything to go by, this has not kept the Malaysian buyers from buying this bike in big numbers. Will the FZ150i maintain its position on top of the sales charts? Does it still have enough appeal to bring in buyers thronging to dealerships? You decide.
