Yamaha NVX155: Reasons to buy

As underbone design moves to a more premium price point, it takes two distinct approaches. The first is the more comfort-oriented urban maxi scooters, and the other goes towards the more performance oriented sporty underbones. Taking the second approach in Yamaha’s stable is the NVX 155. One look at the bike will tell you that it is a premium sporty underbone like no other. But with a price of just under RM 10000, we cannot take it at face value alone. There has to be some substance behind that style. And in the case of the Yamaha NVX 155, there are more than a few reasons.

Modern styling

The NVX 155 is the closest thing to a superbike in the form of an underbone. Even when parked, you can sense a purpose behind the design. There is a high spine that defeats its purpose as a step through for the sake of better performance. The aggressive front will have you believe that it is indeed a sports bike especially in the dark. The dual LED headlights certainly help, as do the LED taillights. The rest of the bike keeps up with racy-edgy panels and sporty graphics. The way the rear grab rail blends into the body also deserves a special mention.

Thoughtful urban practicalities

Every time a scooter rider has to go for a fuel fill up, they have to go through the misery of lifting their seat to expose the fuel filler cap. Thankfully the Yamaha takes a different approach. The NVX 155 comes with a 4.5-litre fuel tank under the footboard and a fuel filler cap on the spine. The fuel filler cap, the seat and the starter can be operated via the same knob situated behind the apron.

Speaking of seats, the underseat storage compartment is massive at 25-litre capacity and can be used to store a full face helmet. Then there is the other storage space behind the apron. Able to fit a water bottle, it comes with a lockable lid and its own 12 V power outlet that can be used to charge devices. The NVX 155 is also sold with a smart key equipped with an immobiliser, allows keyless starts, and also locates the bike with an answer back system. These features are indeed difficult to find on many modern cars, let alone bikes.

Modern display

Being the modern and sporty underbone, the NVX 155 comes with a fully digital and interactive instrument cluster. It is a bright 5.8” LCD display bathed in Yamaha Blu with large numerals in white. The display is interactive, and its welcome screen is customisable. It also comes with a handy voltmeter readout. This comes in handy as everything on this bike needs power to operate. For emergencies, however, there is another hidden key slot under the bike that can be used to open the seat and even change the battery.

Punchy engine

A Blu Core 155 cc engine powers the NVX. The engine is liquid cooled, fuel injected and comes equipped with variable valve actuation. Performance figures of 14.8 hp at 8,000 rpm and peak torque of 14.4 Nm at 6,000 rpm are nothing to sneeze at. Thanks to the powerful engine the bike can reach up to a top speed of 115 kmph. Mileage is also more than decent at 45 kmpl. The mileage is good, thanks to the Stop and Start system that can be switched off from the dashboard. The NVX is, in fact, one of Yamaha’s first vehicles to be given the rating of an EEV.

Able handler

The large 26 mm front forks, sporty dual shock absorbers in the rear and the wide 110/80 front and 140/70 rear tires give it outstanding handling ability. The ride is also comfortable for city roads and stable on highway speeds.

Superb braking

Braking is relegated to a disc brake on the front and a drum brake on the rear. But thanks to the standard front ABS, the NVX 155 always gives accurate and confident braking performance.
