Which Perodua Axia to buy? Variant comparison

Perodua Axia is one of the most affordable cars currently available in Malaysia. It wouldn’t be wrong if we call it Perodua’s bread and butter model, given its popularity, and burgeoning demand. Following the current trend, Perodua launched a slightly updated version of Axia in the country, which was later introduced in Sri Lanka, a prominent overseas market for the petite model where it was first introduced in 2015.

The 2019 Perodua Axia comes in six variants- E, G, Gxtra, Style, SE and AV in Malaysia with a single DOHC engine in manual and automatic variants.

While it remains mostly unchanged visually, some new features join the equipment list, especially the safety kit. A bunch of other changes make the new Axia more interesting than the preceding model. Though, the availability of features differs, based on variant positioning and pricing. To help you with a suitable variant that fits your budget and fulfils all requirements, here is a detailed look at each grade.

Before we delve deep, let us glance the 2019 Perodua Axia specs sheet and price list.

Perodua Axia E MT

The base E comes with standard type bumpers, painted grille and projector headlamps. Sporty bits, such as side skirts, front/rear skirts, fog lamps and rear spoiler have also been left out. This entry-level grade also misses out on alloy wheels, and makes do with 14-inch steel rims. The rear gets LED tail-lamps with red lens, though rear wipers, rear reflectors and electric side mirrors are missing to curb pricing. Utility points, such as bottle holders and cup holders are provided at both ends, however, seat back pockets are not available with it. Among the comfort features, it packs an electric power steering and power windows. Safety features include dual SRS airbags, ISOFIX system, seat belt reminder, key reminder and highlight reminder, etc. as standard. This is the only variant in the Axia line-up with a manual gearbox, rest come with an automatic transmission.

Peroua Axia G AT

In addition to the features available with Axia E MT, the G AT packs power adjusting wing mirrors, rear wipers, seat back pockets, multi-purpose container, 14-inch alloy wheels, etc. Unlike Axia E, the G AT is available with an audio system with USB port, two speakers and central locking. Anti-lock-braking system and electronic brakeforce distribution are part of the pack.

Perodua Axia GXTRA

The powered wing mirrors on the GXTRA come with an additional retractable function, retractable power steering, height adjuster for driver’s seat, assist grip, reverse sensors, vehicle stability control and traction control.

Perodua Axia Style

Unlike the previous variants, this one benefits from wireless door lock and alarm with smart key, smart entry push start/stop button, chrome grille, side skirts, chrome outside door handles, rear spoiler with brake light, rear reflectors and blacked out pillars.

Perodua Axia SE

Along with the features available with Style, the Axia SE also packs integrated turn signals on the wing mirrors, besides this, it carries over all the equipment available with Style.

Perodua Axia AV

Sitting at the top of the range, the AV comes with an advance safety assist (A. S. A) 2.0, leather steering with mounted audio controls and reverse camera. Perodua’s ASA 2.0 consists of a bunch of driver assistance features such as the Pre-Collision Warning with braking and Pedestrian Detection, Front Departure Alert with Pedal Misoperation Control. This brings the difference in cost between SE and AV to RM 4,000 (approximately).

While the base E is bereft of most of the comfort bits, and lacks even an audio system, it packs a well-rounded safety kit featuring dual SR airbags and ISOFIX system, etc. Hence, this variant is suitable for people with a tight budget, especially those planning to upgrade from a two-wheeler to a four-wheeler. The audio system is available from G onwards, it also benefits from ABS with EBD and some other vital bits, and therefore, it is a viable option at an affordable price point of RM 33,490 in the entry-level hatchback space. If you keep safety at fore, GXTRA offers vehicle stability control and traction control as standard, though the next two grades-Style and SE sport additional styling elements for enhanced appearance. On the other hand, the range-topping AV comes with Perodua’s advanced ASA 2.0 system, a reverse camera and steering mounted controls. The ASA 2.0 is a safety suite comprising a set of vital driver assistance features together, hence it is a befitting option for those who looking for a well-rounded petite city hatchback at a low budget.
