The XC40 Recharge will now be known as the EX40 while the C40 Recharge will be called the EC40. The new names seamlessly fit in with the brand’s new electric cars viz. the EX30, EX90, and EM90. These models will hit the roads later this year.
The automaker further confirmed that the XC40 moniker will continue for models powered by internal combustion engines. However, the Recharge badging will no longer be featured on plug-in hybrid models, which will now be identified simply by the T6 or T8 suffix indicating varying power outputs.
According to Volvo, the new naming strategy will allow customers to easily differentiate between fully electric, hybrid, and internal combustion engines.
“By aligning our trailblazing first electric models with the rest of our electric car portfolio, we simplify choice for consumers as we continue to electrify our line-up and refresh our hybrids,” says Björn Annwall, Volvo chief commercial officer and deputy CEO.
Along with the new names, the EX40 and EC40 duo also received a new Performance software pack for Twin Motor variants. The new pack enhances the power output by 34 PS offering a faster acceleration. It also brings a unique pedal mapping on board for quicker accelerator response and a unique ‘Performance’ drive mode that unlocks the full 442 PS.
The new Volvo Performance software will be offered as an optional upgrade pack via the Volvo Cars app in the selected markets at the time of buying a new car. The existing cars can also purchase and download the software online.
Volvo has introduced a special Black Edition of the EX40, EC40, and the XC40 models, sprayed with the Onyx Black paint. The Black Edition models exclusively feature 20-inch five-spoke alloys in high gloss black, high gloss black badging, and Microtech/textile charcoal interiors.
The automaker has also provided an upgrade to its hybrid models. The B5 mild hybrid petrol versions of the XC60 and XC90 now feature a more efficient engine combustion cycle. This update is projected to lead to CO2 emission reductions and fuel economy improvements of approx 4 percent for the XC60 and around 2 percent for the XC90.
