Volvo EC40 debuts in Malaysia – Same EV, same price, new name, RM289k

KUALA LUMPUR: Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) has officially introduced the Volvo EC40, but don’t be fooled—it’s the same C40 Recharge EV, just with a fresh name.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What is the EC40?
It's basically the Volvo C40 Recharge EV but with a new name.Along with the new name, what's new?
New blue colour, 4km more of range and a promotional free wallbox. This move follows Volvo’s global strategy of simplifying its EV naming, ditching “Recharge” and adopting the EC40 moniker for its electric coupe-style SUV.

Familiar power, slightly more range
Underneath the new name, the EC40 keeps the same 82 kWh battery, but range sees a small bump from 550 km to 554 km (WLTP). It still supports 200 kW DC fast charging, meaning you can juice up from 10-80% in just 28 minutes.
Performance remains unchanged, with a twin-motor AWD setup pushing out 300 kW (408 PS)—plenty of power for those who like their EVs to have some muscle.

No price change, but extra perks
If you were hoping for a price drop, well, no luck—the EC40 is priced at RM288,888, the same as the outgoing C40 Recharge. However, VCM is throwing in some incentives.
Buy before March 31, and you’ll get a complimentary RM5,000 wallbox voucher for home charging convenience.
Plus, the EC40 still comes with a five-year Volvo Service Plan (VSP) and five years of complimentary Digital Services (Google Assistant, Google Maps, Google Play Store), along with app-based remote functions.

Volvo’s EV & PHEV naming strategy
The EC40 isn’t the only model getting a name change—Volvo is rolling out a broader renaming strategy across its lineup. The XC40 Recharge is now called the EX40 for the EV version, though as of now, this change has yet to be reflected on Volvo Malaysia’s website. Meanwhile, the XC40 name remains for combustion engine variants.
For plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), Volvo is simplifying things further by introducing T6 or T8 badging, which will indicate powertrain output levels. This new naming approach aims to make it easier for buyers to distinguish between Volvo’s different powertrains at a glance.

A new shade of blue
To mark the refresh, the EC40 gets a new Cloud Blue color option, joining Crystal White, Onyx Black, Sage Green, and Silver Dawn.
While the name may have changed, the EC40 remains the same sleek, all-electric SUV it was before—just with a little extra polish and a simplified identity.
