Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years edition crowned as the fastest R model ever

KUALA LUMPUR: Back in May, Volkswagen revealed the limited-edition 20th anniversary edition of the Volkswagen Golf R as the fastest and most powerful Golf yet. Now, we get to know that this special Golf R 20 Years edition has become the fastest R model on the Nurburgring track after breaking the record of the current production Golf R.

Benny Leuchter, the professional driver behind the wheel of the Golf R 20 Years, managed to complete the fearsome Nürburgring-Nordschleife track in 7:47.31 minutes, a whole 4 seconds faster than the standard R.

Well, this is not much surprising as the special edition Golf pushes the 2.0-litre turbo four-cyl engine to deliver a maximum power of 328 horsepower and a peak torque of 420 Nm. That’s 13 hp and 20 Nm more than the donor vehicle. The car can hit the century sprint in 4.6 seconds and attain a top speed of 270 kmph.

Not only that, but the 20th Anniversary Golf also benefits from a reprogrammed engine management computer providing a sharper acceleration and more immediate throttle response. Also part of the kit is a reprogrammed DSG automatic transmission that promises more satisfying shifts, an R-Performance package, Driving Dynamics Manager, and an R-Performance Torque Vectoring. 

The performance car also gets a “Special” driving mode, which is developed with the input of Leuchter. It has been specifically calibrated to make the Golf R 20 Years edition as effective on the ring as possible. Other available modes are - Drift, Comfort, Sport, and Race.

Leuchter, who is thoroughly impressed with the car’s performance, mentioned, “With this car, I can drive here on the Nurburgring and the next stop is then the bakers or the DIY store. The vehicle is really an all-rounder that can do everything.”

The production period of the Golf R 20th Anniversary edition is limited to just one year which makes it a collector’s item as soon as it rolls off the production line.
