Upgraded Proton X70 spotted testing, likely to launch in 2021
KUALA LUMPUR: The upgraded Proton X70 sports utility vehicle (SUV) has been spotted testing, according to CarSpiritPK, and the vehicle is slated for a 2021 launch. Pictures of the heavily camouflaged car have since gone viral on the internet. The X70 has been one of the most successful products from Proton Holdings Berhad and has breached several records in the Malaysian car market.
The Proton X70 is based on the Geely Boeyue and is available in both two-wheel-drive (2WD) and four-wheel-drive (4WD) options. Both are powered by a 1.8-litre turbocharged gasoline direct injection (T-GDI) petrol motor producing 183PS maximum power and 285Nm peak torque. The 4-cylinder engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The car, however, will be sold in some international markets with a 6-speed automatic transmission (AT).
Major features of the Proton X70 include -
- Up to six airbags
- Antilock Braking System (ABS)
- Automatic wipers and headlights
- Push start
- Keyless entry with touch sensors on front door handles
- Automatic emergency braking
- 360-degree camera
- Climate control with a smart air purification function
- Adaptive cruise control
- LED projector headlights with daytime running lights (DRLs)
- Electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors (OVRMs)
- 18-inch alloy wheels and LED fog lamps
The car also has a voice recognition system and a fully digital instrument cluster. The vehicle’s current version has Nappa leather upholstery in the cabin to forge a premium feel. The X70 was awarded a 5-star rating, the highest, in the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asia (ASEAN-NCAP). It also won the Malaysian Car of the Year Award in 2019.
The Proton X70 was launched in 2018 and has since won many enthusiasts. The car is available in Flame Red, Jet Grey, Snow White, Armour Silver, and Cinnamon Brown paint schemes. The upgraded X70 may get additional colour options. The five-seat SUV comes in the STANDARD 2WD, EXECUTIVE 2WD, EXECUTIVE AWD, and PREMIUM 2WD trims.
The outgoing version of the X70 commands an entry-level price of RM 99,800 which is expected to rise when the new model is introduced. It will renew its competition with the Mitsubishi ASX and the Honda CR-V in its segment. The Honda Civic is also an indirect rival of the Proton X70.
