Toyota Innova EV Concept revealed; Will it come to Malaysia?

The Toyota Innova is one such MPV that does not require an introduction. Still, the one you see above does because it's a zero-emission equivalent of the model that was recently unveiled for the Indonesian market at the ongoing Indonesia International Motor Show.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What powers the Toyota Innova EV?

Toyota has not yet revealed the Innova EV's technical specifications, but it is expected to be a potent offering in terms of range and performance.
  • Will Toyota Innova EV come to Malaysia?

In the light of Toyota's plans for sustainable mobility and the tax breaks available for electric cars, we expect the Innova electric MPV's arrival in Malaysia.
  • Toyota showcased the Innova EV as a concept based on the current-gen model with the internal combustion engine swapped out for an all-electric powertrain as the most significant change. While Toyota remains numb on revealing the EV's technical specifications, we expect it would be a potent offering in range and performance.

Design-wise, although it looks similar to the non-electric Innova, the automaker tried to give it a unique identity with a completely closed off front grille, slightly altered front bumper and a new set of alloy wheels. Also, parts of the kit are blue accents on the headlights and taillights and a dedicated 'Electric' badge confirming its electric nature.

Inside, broader things remain identical with the same 8.0-inch infotainment system, multi-information display and a three-spoke steering wheel. However, a closer look reveals new hues on the instrument display and EV-specific info (range and battery level) on the infotainment unit.

Will Toyota Innova EV come to Malaysia?

With a global plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the Japanese automaker commenced Malaysia's transition to sustainable mobility earlier this year. UMW Toyota has launched its first locally assembled hybrid vehicle, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, with Toyota New Global Architecture as a base.

At the time of commencing the brand's electrified journey, Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor stated, "Malaysians are in support of green technology and environmental sustainability, and this is evident in the increasing orders for the new Corolla Cross Hybrid. This shows that sustainable mobility is the way forward as the world collectively shifts towards clean and renewable fuels, as well as innovative and intelligent vehicles."

Looking at the ICE-powered Innova MPV, the current model has been around for a long time, and the market expects a ground-up update in a few years. Moreover, as per the reports, the hybrid version of the Innova is also on the cards.

Thus, in light of Toyota's plans for sustainable mobility and the tax breaks available for electric cars in Malaysia, the automaker might consider bringing the Innova electric into the town.
