Second-gen Mazda CX-3 teased; likely to be showcased at Geneva Motor Show 2019

KUALA LUMPUR: Mazda has said that it will reveal a brand new compact SUV at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. This new model is likely to be the second-generation CX-3 and has been teased ahead of its Geneva debut.

The new teaser shows the upcoming SUV’s rear profile. This mysterious SUV will be the second model in Mazda’s next-generation lineup. The second-generation CX-3 adorns the Kodo design philosophy, which can be seen on the fourth-generation Mazda 3. The new Mazda SUV will be built on the SkyActiv-Vehicle Architecture, which means a stronger body structure and stiffer chassis. Also, there will be a re-engineered torsion beam for the rear suspension system.

Kiyoshi Fujiwara, the head of the R&D branch and director of Mazda said that the existing SkyActiv models faced a lot of criticism, quoting that cars are 'very noisy'. So, the company has given a brand-new torsion beam axle in place of the multi-link suspension to reduce the road noise.

It has a similar appearance to the current CX-3. From the outline on the teaser image, the new SUV appears to get a wider stance and a more flowing roofline compared to the current model.

The second-generation Mazda CX-3 features a new design for tail lights with circular graphic resembling that on the current CX-5. The LED setup does not end here as there are trailing light bars which continues up to the tailgate. Also, Mazda logo is visible sightly in the image.

Mazda has said that the engine will be powered by a mix of SkyActiv internal combustion and SkyActiv-X compression ignition mill. The latter is a new high-tech petrol mill with SPCCI (Spark Controlled Compression Ignition). The company has mentioned that the supercharged unit will be capable of delivering diesel mill like mileage along with petrol engine like performance.
