Range Rover turns 50, exclusive ‘Fifty’ edition revealed

KUALA LUMPUR: With a perfect blend of excellent design, supreme all-terrain capability, and sophisticated luxury, the iconic Range Rover stands out from the crowd. And it is amazing to know that the Land Rover’s flagship SUV has been around us for half a century. 

Despite lying in the highly saturated SUV segment, Range Rover maintains a level of reputation that few can achieve. To celebrate this milestone, Range Rover launched a limited-edition model appropriately named Fifty. The production is limited to 1,970 units globally to mark the 1970 birth year.

Based on the lavish Autobiography trim level, the Range Rover Fifty will be available in both standard and long-wheelbase body designs with a choice of four exterior colours - Carpathian Grey, Aruba, Rosello Red, and Santorini Black. The brand also offers three gorgeous colors taken from the original model’s palette - Tuscan Blue, Bahama Gold, and Davos White for minimal units.

The highlights of Range Rover Fifty include several exterior accents in Auric Atlas, two unique 22-inch wheel designs, and a ‘Fifty’ script badging personally created by Prof Gerry McGovern OBE, Land Rover’s Chief Creative Officer. The badge appears on several places throughout the exterior and interior, including centre console, dashboard headrests, and illuminated treadplates.

Though technical specifications will vary from market to market, the automaker has announced that the American-spec Fifty will be powered by a 5.0-litre V8 supercharged engine paired with 8-speed automatic transmission, churning out 518 PS and 625 Nm of torque. The SUV will cover the run from zero to 100 kmph in 5.1 seconds.

Over its 50-year lifespan, the SUV has attained many world firsts and completed numerous impressive feats. It was the first to get a permanent 4WD system in 1970, it was the first 4x4 to have ABS anti-lock brakes in 1989, and it was the first 4x4 to equip electronic traction control and automatic electronic air suspension in 1992. Moreover, it became the first SUV to feature all-aluminium lightweight construction in 2012.

The pricing and local specifications of Range Rover Fifty are expected to announce closer to the on-sale date in late 2020. For the regular version, Range Rover price starts from RM 990,000.
