Proton X90 coming to Malaysia in Q2 of 2023

KUALA LUMPUR: The wait for the Proton X90 will soon get over, as per Roslan Abdullad, the brand’s CEO, recent sort-off cryptic speed.

We along with several other trusted sources have come down to the conclusion that the X90 will land on our shores in the second quarter of 2023 and the offering will include a mild hybrid variant as well.

With the introduction of a mild hybrid model, Proton will take its first step in its electrification journey which in the future will introduce full-blown EVs.

Currently, Proton's new engine assembly line in Tanjung Malim is making the same 1.5-litre TGDi three-cylinder mill on which the Geely Haoyue/Okavango’s mild-hybrid 1.5-litre turbocharged powertrain is based. The latter makes a max power of 190 hp along with a peak torque of 300 Nm with drive sent to the front wheels via a 7-speed DCT gearbox.

The said 1.5 TGDi engine by Proton is designed to perform electrification duty from the start, thus making it a fairly straightforward add-on by the company. Also, the mild-hybrid powertrain is on display at the Proton’s Gallery of Inspiration, at its Centre of Excellence.

As for the upcoming Proton X90, the car is no longer a secret at this point, as the car has been on several occasions on the local roads. Based on the Geely Haoyue, the seven-seater model will be the brand's flagship offering post-launch and will sit on top of its existing SUV lineup consisting of the X50 and X70.

Though the automaker is still to reveal X90’s specifications, the upcoming SUV is expected to be powered by the standard 1.5 TGDi three-cylinder engine (for the non-electrified version) and feature a high level of connectivity features.
