Perodua EV testing starts this June; December 2025 launch confirmed

KUALA LUMPUR: Perodua has been working on its first-ever electric car for quite some time. The automaker gave us the first official glimpse of the EV back in 2023 in the form of the EM-O concept, followed by upgraded iterations in 2024. Well, here comes an important update on the highly anticipated arrival of Perodua EV.

    In a recent interview with the New Straits Times, Sime Group’s CEO Datuk Jeffri Salim Davidson confirmed that the testing of Perodua’s first EV will begin in June. And, the most-awaited launch will happen in December this year. 

    That means the timeline meets the Malaysian Government’s Electric Vehicle Agenda which calls for national carmakers to roll out EVs by 2025.

    Perodua EV: What to expect?

    • Perodua’s first EV seems to be an affordable and practical option in the crowded EV market with an expected price tag of less than RM 100,000.
    • It is likely to get an LFP battery pack sourced from CATL, offering a range of 400 to 410 km on a single charge. 
    • For the e-motor setup, we can refer to the eMO-I concept featuring a 3-phase permanent magnet synchronous electric motor tuned to deliver a maximum power of 163 hp and a peak torque of 220 Nm.

    • Perodua will initially import the motor, inverter, and battery and plan to localize them at a later stage.
    • Taking cues from the concept versions, the production-spec Perodua EV is expected to look bold and futuristic with sharp angles and sleek curves.

    • In terms of features, we can expect LED headlights and tail lights, sleek displays, and other creature comforts such as powered front seats, an automatic air-conditioning system, and a rearview camera.
    • The EV may come equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems, which offer protection to occupants and other road users.
