The Omoda E5 has successfully passed two crucial battery safety tests - water wading and underbody scraping. What is the significance of these safety tests?
These safety tests are essential in assessing the vehicle's durability, off-road driving capabilities, and safety features.According to the press release issued by SPG Automobiles Pvt. Ltd., the authorised distributor for Omoda & Jaecoo brands in Nepal, the Omoda E5 “successfully withstood these challenges, demonstrating the vehicle’s reliable safety capabilities.”

During the water wading test, the EV was driven through a pool with water levels reaching up to the front grille. This caused the water level to rise to about three-quarters of the vehicle's face. Despite these conditions, it manoeuvred through the immersion pool smoothly, passing the test without any indication of water leakage, electrical issues, or alarm activation. These exceptional water-wading capabilities ensure a smooth and secure driving experience even in adverse weather conditions.
The underbody scraping test, on the other hand, evaluated the EV's ground clearance and structural integrity. For the evaluation, a real-world scenario with obstacles on roads was designed, where the EV was subjected to driving over a 210 mm high metal post. After scraping its lowest point, 30 mm above the obstacle, the underbody battery pack remained undamaged and was proven effectively protected. The test highlighted the EV’s durability and suitability for diverse road conditions.
“Safety has always been the foundational principle of Omoda’s vehicle manufacturing. The Omoda E5’s satisfactory performance in both the water wading and underbody scraping tests is a testament to Omoda’s utmost pursuit of safety. This not only significantly assures users of their future travel but also showcases how Omoda, through its advancements in safety technology, continues to elevate industry standards,” Omoda said in the official press statement.
The Omoda E5 is offered in a single variant in the local market, priced at RM146,800 (on the road, without insurance).
