Next-generation Innova might come with a hybrid powerplant

KUALA LUMPUR: It was only a while back when the Japanese automaker introduced the new Innova. The new model is sleeker on the inside and outside, however, the MPV keeps its robust and rugged capability while still delivering comfortable ride quality to the passengers.

The current-gen model is offered in both petrol and turbodiesel mill options. However, according to an Indian website, the next-gen Innova might carry a completely new under the hood setup.

According to the report by the Indian website, the Japanese automaker is planning to build a gasoline-hybrid engine for the Toyota MPV in India. This move is said to be taken to meet the strict emission and fuel consumption policies in the country. This, on the other hand, means a big goodbye to the diesel option.

A source close to the company said, “Diesel engine option for the next replacement of Innova seems off the cards right now. Toyota will develop the next generation of the Innova with the hybrid system and given the stricter emission and fuel efficiency norms, and this strategy makes perfect sense.”

With India planning to lower its dependence on diesel, it surely makes sense for the company to go for a hybrid mill with its best-selling MPV. Not only will it be cleaner with fewer pollutants, but it might also even deliver more power, thanks to the electric assist.

Next-generation Innova REAR

There is no clarity as to what could possibly lie under the hood. However, one thing is pretty clear that it won’t be a mill from the current generation (it’s very unlikely). Most of the company’s hybrid engines are rear-wheel drive, and the Innova is traditionally rear-wheel drive, so who knows what might change here. We are expecting Toyota to develop a mill that could be shared and adapted by similar modes like the Hilux and Fortuner.

The update from the Indian website is recommended to be taken with a grain of salt. Why? Well, because the sales of hybrid cars in developing countries are still catching up, it’s mainly for its high price tag compared to their ICE competitors and counterparts.
