Next-gen Toyota Innova teased, global debut next month

KUALA LUMPUR: One of the best-selling Toyota models, the Innova, is set to arrive in an all-new avatar. The automaker has recently unveiled the first official glimpse of the next-gen MPV in Indonesia where it will be called the ‘Innova Zenix'. 

Replacing the second-generation model, the upcoming Innova is described as “the next prestigious crossover” by the automaker. It benefits from a crossover-like front fascia with a large grille bracketed by new dual-beam LED projector headlights. There are multiple creases on the bonnet adding the flair of aggression to the MPV. We can also point out the triangular housings for the fog lights on the restyled bumper. 

The upgraded MPV will be based on a monocoque platform (Toyota New Global Architecture) replacing the ladder-on-frame underpinnings for the first time. With the new base, the vehicle will occupy a larger footprint measuring around 4700 mm in length with a 2,850 mm long wheelbase. These numbers make the upcoming Innova slightly larger than the ongoing model with cabin space as its continuing USP. Like the existing vehicle, the next-gen Innova is also likely to offer multiple seating options.

Another debutant for the popular Japanese MPV will be a hybrid drivetrain under the bonnet. While the specifications are scarce at the moment, the automaker confirms the front-wheel-drive for the greener mill that may comprise a 2.0-litre unit generating over 190 hp. Along with that, Toyota is likely to offer a petrol engine option to lower the base model price. Shifting duties may be handled by a CVT automatic instead of the 5-speed MT and 6-speed AT on offer with the current version.

When it comes to features, the third-generation Innova is expected to come with a much longer list, which may include a sunroof, wireless charging, an 'ottoman function' for the middle captain chairs, a bigger and more advanced infotainment unit, electric parking brake with auto brake hold, a 360-degree camera and Toyota’s safety and driver assistance systems such as 

Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Warning, Front Departure Alert, and Adaptive Cruise Control.
