New Toyota GR Hilux could get a V6 diesel engine

KUALA LUMPUR: It seems like Toyota has fastened the belts to make a high-performance version of every model in its portfolio. And this time, it’s Toyota Hilux turn to get the GR badge. As per the report of CarsGuide, the firm had received the GR Hilux trademark in Australia in February. The new Hilux will lock horns with Ford Ranger Raptor.

Being a performance version, the new Toyota GR Hilux will be getting the high mechanical numbers. However, no information has been revealed in this regard. Presently, the most powerful Hilux trim is powered by the 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel unit, which is capable of generating 177 PS of maximum power and 450 Nm of peak torque. 

To compete with Ranger Raptor, the high-performance off-road version of the Hilux could get an all-new V6 turbo diesel unit, which is ready to debut in the upcoming Land Cruiser 300 Series. While output is not yet confirmed, it is expected to meet or exceed the 270 PS and 650 Nm from the current V8 diesel mill of Land Cruiser 200 Series. On the other hand, the Ranger Raptor is powered by a 2.0-litre EcoBlue bi-turbo four-cylinder diesel engine producing 213 PS and 500 Nm of torque. 

In this context, the company official stated, “We’re always taking a keen interest in the high-performance ute market, but at this stage, we have nothing announce. But like we’ve said in the past, we are not ruling truly out any model from GR modification. We race the Hilux in Dakar, so it’s definitely not out of the question that we could see a vehicle like that some time in the future.”
