New Toyota 86 to drive better than GR Supra, claims company

KUALA LUMPUR: After 17 years, the Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer, Toyota partnered with BMW to showcase the new Supra. Now, Toyota is taking its time to come out with the next-generation 86.

The current-gen Toyota 86 has been ruling the market for more than seven years and was co-developed with the famous car manufacturer, Subaru. In an interview, the current model’s chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, gave a clue by telling the publication that they have a new 86 team. It signifies that the development of the car is under process and it would be worth waiting for this car.

A Toyota representative stated in an interview that they aim to make the next-generation vehicle to drive better than the current Supra, which is a rear-wheel-drive coupe. The chief engineer said that buyers are actually anticipating the 86 to be much more exciting than the A90, and that’s the reason why the carmaker wants to build a new 86 that excels the Supra.

In addition to that, the Japanese carmaker is also planning to offer a small sports car while they are working on the 1000 hp GR Super Sport hypercar. Currently, you can find a plethora of rumours running around in the market, and some of those also states that there’s a possibility of gaining Mazda’s forthcoming rear-wheel-drive platform.

Apart from the rumours, the fact that matters is, Subaru confirmed that they are developing a larger 2.4-litre boxer engine that will perform the duties in the new version of the 86. If you are wondering whether it will be turbocharged or naturally aspirated, there is no reliable data present. But it can be expected that it would perform better than the criticized 205 hp of the current powertrain. Earlier this year, Subaru spokesperson said “We are working on it. There will be a second-generation BRZ.”
