New Mercedes-AMG SL: What's its bodyshell like?
KUALA LUMPUR: It is a well-known fact that the upcoming Mercedes-AMG SL convertible will replace the ongoing Mercedes-Benz SL roadster. Yes, the SL model going forward will be marketed under the brand's AMG banner. And with this revision will come several technical changes, both inside-out.
Today, we'll be focusing on the vehicle's prime structure, its bodyshell. For the new-age model, the Mercedes-AMG arm has been picked by high technology material and construction methods. Together they'll deliver the brand's high-performance credentials.
So, without further adieu let's dig deep. The very core of the upcoming Mercedes-AMG SL is a combination of an aluminium space frame with a self-supporting structure. The origin of this superb combo dates back to 1952 when it was featured on the model.
Key highlights of the upcoming Mercedes-AMG SL bodyshell -
- The structure you see in the pictures (body-in-weight) without bonnet, doors, and other elements weigh 270 kg
- The construction is a mix of steel, aluminium, fibre composites, and magnesium
- The front module bridge is made of a mixture of glass and carbon composite materials
- Compared to the previous-gen model, the new bodyshell's torsional stiffness is 18% stronger
- Compared to the AMG GT Roadster, it features 40% higher longitudinal rigidity and 50% higher transverse
- The car's high-performance battery pack will sit in the big bowl-shaped section seen at the bodyshell's boot area
It is to be noted the new Mercedes-AMG SL vehicle concept aims towards the lowest possible centre of gravity. It thus transverse to the lowest possible arrangement of the rigidity and low connection points for the engine and axles in the bodyshell structure.
As per reports, the high-quality soft-top used in the new Mercedes-AMG SL will revert back to folding metal roofs. Furthermore, the latest model will benefit from the brand's 4Matic variable all-wheel-drive system.
