The new G-Class comes with exceptional off-road features, even perhaps surpassing its ICE counterpart. The G-Class which is known for its exceptional off-road capabilities is now electrified and the electric G-Class seamlessly blends traditional rugged charm with cutting-edge technology, representing a significant leap towards sustainable mobility.
With a design that stays true to the G-Class's angular silhouette and robust ladder frame, the new model integrates electric drive while maintaining the vehicle's legendary aesthetics and durability. The vehicle features a high-voltage lithium-ion battery strategically placed within the frame to ensure a low center of gravity, enhancing stability and driving dynamics. The battery boasts a capacity of 116 kWh, providing a range of up to 473 kilometers according to WLTP standards.
Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, highlighted the evolution of the G-Class, "Throughout its more than 45-year history, the G-Class has always used the most modern drive technology available. So, it's entirely fitting that the innovative drive concept with four individually controlled electric motors once again raises the legendary performance of our off-road icon to a new level. It even retains that familiar angular silhouette and is true to the character of our beloved ‘Geländewagen".
According to Mercedes-Benz, the new electric G-Class is equipped with advanced features that set new standards in off-road capability. Each wheel is powered by its own electric motor, allowing for precise power distribution and superior handling, particularly in challenging terrains. Unique functionalities such as the G-TURN, which enables the vehicle to turn almost on the spot, and G-STEERING, which offers a tighter turning radius off-road, highlight the innovative integration of technology.
The G 580 with EQ Technology delivers a maximum torque of 1,164 Nm. This torque is intelligently distributed by the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) and the central powertrain control (CPC) to enhance traction exactly where it's needed.
Equipped with an advanced electric drive system, the G 580 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, with a top speed that is electronically limited to 180 km/h. The electric motors provide maximum torque from zero rpm, giving the vehicle strong initial thrust and making it highly responsive, especially on steep or uneven terrains. This capability ensures the G-Class can handle demanding off-road conditions with ease.
Safety and stability is also highly considered, with the electric G-Class capable of handling grades up to 100% and lateral slopes of up to 35 degrees. It surpasses its predecessors with a maximum fording depth of 850 millimeters—150 millimeters more than the conventionally powered versions. The vehicle also features LOW RANGE gearing for enhanced propulsion in off-road conditions and utilizes intelligent torque vectoring to simulate the effects of traditional differential locks.
The new G-Class employs torque vectoring to create virtual differential locks, allowing precise control of torque to each wheel. This technology ensures torque is delivered exactly where it's needed in just fractions of a second, enabling the vehicle to maintain a steady and confident trajectory both uphill and downhill, even on challenging terrain.
Virtual differential locks facilitate a fully variable distribution of drive torque across the individual wheels, optimizing traction and flexibility while minimizing distortion during cornering. This technology keeps the electric G-Class nimble and maneuverable under all conditions, including when the virtual differential lock is engaged.
Unlike traditional systems, there's no need for manual activation of differential locks through the off-road control unit, as everything is controlled automatically. This simplification enhances ease of use and improves safety in demanding driving situations.
Aesthetically, the electric G-Class maintains the classic look but with distinct enhancements that signify its electric nature, such as the optional black-panel radiator grille and unique air curtains that improve aerodynamics. The interior is furnished with luxurious amenities standard in the G 580 model, including the MBUX infotainment system, nappa leather steering wheel, and ambient lighting. Additional options like the Burmester® 3D surround sound system and a digital off-road cockpit further enrich the driving experience.
The Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology and its special EDITION ONE variant both embody the classic G-Class design but diverge in their offerings. The G 580 maintains the traditional look with standard luxury features, while the EDITION ONE elevates this with exclusive design elements such as blue trim strips, specialized color schemes, and additional standard equipment like the AMG Line and Night Package. This special model also enhances the interior with unique nappa leather upholstery and advanced comfort features, priced distinctly higher to reflect its added exclusivity and comprehensive enhancements.
The all-new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology starts at 142,621.50 euros(RM730k), with the special EDITION ONE variant available at 192,524.15 euros(RM986k).
