Mercedes-Benz to Stick with V8 Engines
KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes Benz has announced to stick with V8 engines for its futuristic vehicles in order to save the environment. Right from the Mercedes-AMG C 63 to AMG GT Coupe, all models will be powered by a V8 engine. Chief of Mercedes-Benz R&D, Dr. Thomas Weber, confirmed that all cars in the lineup will be V8-powered.
“We are completely convinced we will stay with V8s, forever maybe,” he further added. Many customers are there who still want Mercedes-Benz to be powered with the mighty V12 engine.
In the present world, regulations regarding CO2 emissions are very strict. Moreover, the introduction of autonomous cars may kill the joy of motoring, in the name of environmental conservation.
Dr Weber has also claimed that by the year 2020, the emission regulations will become so strict, that irrespective of the car's output, its emission will have to be limited to just 95 g/km.
He added that capacity of V8s is reduced to increase its efficiency. Under this effort, the new AMG twin-turbo 4.0L V8 engine is significantly smaller than the preceding 5.5L bi-turbo unit, which in-turn was less than AMG's iconic 6.2L naturally-aspirated V8.
Dr Weber claimed further that the V8 engine will be more beneficial in future, and will be revealed with some elements like cylinder deactivation, electric harvesting as in F1 cars and electrification.
“The make-up may be different in the future. How small can you go? I'm not sure just at the moment, but with the strategy we have now, the next question is electrification in terms of performance. That is for sure in the future.” he added further.
He confirmed that F1 power units are most important foundations for Mercedes Benz and indicate that the “age of the naturally-aspirated engine is definitely over and done with.” Therefore, it will be more useful to purchase a Mercedes-benz with naturally aspirated V8 engine for a safe environment.
