Mercedes-Benz Thailand to soon get the all-electric EQS sedan

KUALA LUMPUR: There is nothing new about Thailand getting the most amazing and efficient cars first among the ASEAN countries. Further, proving the point is the upcoming launch of the all-electric sedan, the EQS.

The Thai-spec model will be manufactured at the Thonburi Automotive Assembly Plant (TAAP), Samut Prakan. Thus, becoming the first electric Mercedes-Benz model to be built at this plant. And so the EQS would be sold as a locally-assembled CKD model in the country. Also, making the Land of Smiles the first country outside Germany to manufacture the EQS.

Speaking of the manufacturing plant, it is a product of the partnership between the TAAP and Thonburi Energy Storage System. Established in 2019, it is Mercedes-Benz one of nine battery producing factories.

Which EQS variant will be sold and built in Thailand?

The automaker has not given any specifications on the variant and price. However, the country will most likely get the EQS 450+ variant. This one is powered by a single rear motor electric mill that pumps out a maximum power of 333 PS along with a peak torque of 568 Nm. The line-up also includes EQS 580 4Matic that generates 523 PS of power and 855 Nm of torque.

As we aren't aware of the trim level that'll go on sale in Thailand, discussing specs of the rumoured variant is useless.

So, moving on. In other news, Mercedes-Benz also plans to launch the Maybach GLS (full-imported) later this year in Thailand. Besides, Mercedes Thailand is preparing to assemble and sell the W223-S-Class PHEV version, the S580e.

What's happening in Malaysia?

Here in Malaysia, Mercedes-Benz is awaiting greater clarity on the country's electrification direction before launching a full-electric vehicle. If everything is in favour, we might get our hands on the EQS soon.
