Mercedes-Benz G-Class reaches 500k production milestone

KUALA LUMPUR: The name G-Class is fairly popular and is one of the brand’s longest-running production vehicles. Introduced way back in 1979, the model on 20th April reached the 500,000 production milestone.

“On the occasion of the 500,000th anniversary, we would like to thank both our loyal customers and long-time fans as well as our employees and our production partner Magna Steyr in Graz. We are proud of this figure, which also underscores the exclusivity of the G-Class,” said Dr Emmerich Schiller, Mercedes-Benz G Chairman, and CEO and Mercedes-Benz AG Head of Off-Road Vehicle Product Division.

He further added, “After all, four whole decades have led to this significant anniversary. This makes the G-Class anything but a mass product. With the all-electric G-Class launching in 2024, which will push the boundaries of the off-road sector, we look forward with anticipation to the future of the off-road icon.”

The 500,000th unit of the G-Class rolled off at the automaker’s Graz, Austria production facility and features several design features both on the inside and out inspired by the 1986 Mercedes-Benz G-Class 280 GE model. Part of the is -

• Iconic round headlamps with LED
• Turn signals with the retro orange cover
• Spare wheel cover with a larger-than-usual Mercedes-Benz star,
• The brand badge on the rear door
• Five-spoke sterling silver wheel
• Passenger-side door handle with agave green ‘No. 500,000’ lettering
• ‘Schöckl’ door sill trim
• Logo embossing on the door handle

Don’t confuse the 500,000th unit of the G-Class for a yesteryear car due to its iconic looks, as underneath all the old styling it packs modern features, like the driver assistance system.

Mercedes-Benz will soon start the production of the all-electric G-Class for the model’s 45th production anniversary which is due for 2024. Alongside the electric G-Class, the automaker will also roll out combustion engine models, so there’s something for everyone.

The local-spec model is offered as a fully-imported unit in Malaysia which retails for RM 1,788,888 (on-the-road without insurance).
