McLaren reveals track-only hypercar; the 2021 720S GT3X
KUALA LUMPUR: For 2021, McLaren had planned something exceptional and it has now been unboxed in the form of the 2021 720S GT3X hypercar. This one is a special edition model based on the 720S GT3 race car, however, McLaren claims it to get several improvements. For instance, it benefits from better aerodynamics, enhanced engine output, and increased stopping power.
"We’ve already got a very good GT3-based car, but we wanted to make it faster," said McLaren Automotive motorsport division head Ian Morgan. He further said, "We're very very proud of what we've achieved. I hope it delivers good satisfaction to the customer and a lot of fun."
Powering the McLaren special edition 720S GT3X is the improved version of the existing 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 mill that pumps out a maximum power of 711 hp. The said mill is paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels.
The deal here is that the 720S GT3X special edition comes with a 'boost' button mounted on the steering wheel that when pressed churns out an extra power of 27 hp. Thus, allowing the total power output to stand at 738 hp.
On the performance front, McLaren has not yet disclosed the 0-100 kmph run time. However, the automaker claims the special edition model to be significantly faster than the regular - both in a straight line and around a track. The 720 GT3 completes the century sprint in just 2.6 seconds.
To enable the 720S GT3X to deliver impeccable performance, the engineers have heavily upgraded its cooling system. Similar improvements are also done on the carbon-ceramic disc brakes and aerodynamic package.
What's surprising is that the 720 GT3X even features a passenger seat between the driver and roll-cage. The same is missing in the 720s GT3 race car due to certain regulations.
