McLaren 720S Spider

The 720S Spider on all its trims features a refined and luxurious interior styling. The car features a centrally-mounted 8.0-inch high-resolution Central Infotainment Screen on the inside. The console can control audio, media, navigation, climate control, and all other convenience features within the vehicle. 

The dual-zone climate control and air conditioning system has been redesigned to suit the convertible features and operate base on the top’s position. 

McLaren has taken care of the fact that the 720S Spider will need additional bracing and strengthening to sustainably manage the power of over 700 hp. Although accommodating the roof motors and panels and the use of super-stiff carbon fibre tub instead of aluminium monocoque has led to a weight gain, but it has been limited to a minimum of just 49kg. 

The 720S Spider’s chassis tub is now a Monocage II-S with a carbon rear section behind the seats for the roof to fold into. The door glass is frameless and the roof is moved by electric motors instead of hydraulics, so the noise is limited to minimum. And it moves fast, too. 

The 720S Spider’s underfloor aerodynamics is made compatible with the new rear bodywork and features a full-width active rear spoiler. On the front, the eye sockets go deep into the front fenders, providing an aggressive stance to the vehicle with double-skinned dihedral doors and the glazed RHT option. 

The Spider comes with twin five-spoke lightweight forged alloy wheels, specially designed by McLaren for the car. The car also comes with 19-inch 245/35 front and 20-inch 305/30 rear Pirelli P Zero tyres that make for excellent stability at high speeds and around the corners. The steering is pretty responsive and the aerodynamic design of the vehicle makes for an excellent driving experience. 

The new roof mechanism assisted by electric motors can complete the sun vs rain routine in just 11 seconds and can now function even at 50 kmph. The car offers superior all-round visibility and the new glazed buttresses improve over-the-shoulder visibility. 

The new 720S Spider features the same powertrain as the coupe, which is an M840T 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that can make 720 hp of power and 770 Nm of torque. 

The car comes with a rear-wheel-drive system and the engine is paired to a highly efficient seven-speed dual-clutch SSG transmission. In terms of performance, the Spider is absolutely ecstatic. It can go from 0-100 kmph in about 2.9 seconds and also reach top speeds of 341 kmph which is identical to the coupe. With the roof lowered, the car can go up to 325 kmph.

A very capable pair of brakes on the front and rear provide the car with adequate stopping power and the standard ABS makes for stable and safe braking. McLaren has put in a range of safety features including Front and Side Airbags for the driver and passenger, Brake Assist, EBD, Vehicle Stability Control System, Parking Sensors, Crash Sensor, Front Impact Beams, Side Impact Beams, and Traction Control.

The 720S Spider is a far better package in terms of weight, performance, and refinement and can easily beat its closest competitors. The roadster is an excellent package, although a bit expensive, but is surely worth buying.
