Mazda 3 and CX-30 gets new top-trim models in Australia

KUALA LUMPUR: Mazda Malaysia has introduced a new range-topping variant in Mazda 3 and CX-30 lineup. It is called the Astina SkyActiv-X M Hybrid and features the automakers advanced Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI) engine.

The new Astina SkyActiv-X M Hybrid mill combines the best of both the worlds - regular spark ignition benefits (found in a petrol engine) with leaner running cycle (located in a compression-ignition diesel engine). Further, the use of a mild hybrid engine extends the car's fuel-saving capabilities.

According to Mazda Australia, the Mazda 3 Astina SkyActiv-X M Hybrid will go on sale from August 2020, where else the smaller CX-30 Astina SkyActiv-X M Hybrid will be available from September onwards. Thus, making Mazda 3 the first model to benefit from the SkyActiv-X engine.

Talking about the performance figures, the SkyActiv-X 2.0-litre engine churns out a maximum power of 180 PS at 6000 rpm along with a peak torque of 224 Nm at 3,000 rpm. Compared to the regular SkyActiv-G engine, it produces this torque at 1000 rpm lower faster. Within the Mazda lineup, the X20 models are placed between the 155 PS/200 Nm G20 and 189 PS/252 Nm G25 variants.

The engine in question is paired to a 24-volt mild-hybrid system that stores energy during braking and deceleration. The harvested power then assists the petrol engine; a belt-driven integrated starter generator plays the mediator. Also, the SkyActiv-X M Hybrid powertrain ignites the fuel under compression, the same way a diesel motor works. The company claims the car to offer torque and fuel efficiency of a diesel motor and high-revving nature of a petrol unit.

Mazda 3 Astina SkyActiv-X M Hybrid price in Australia will start at AUD 40,590 (RM 120,727) for six-speed manual and AUD 41,590 (RM 123,672) for six-speed automatic.

Mazda CX-30 Astina SkyActiv-X M Hybrid price in Australia will start at AUD 46,490 (RM 138,551) for automatic and AWD only. The premium of picking an X20 trim over a G25 one in Australia is AUD 3000 (RM 8939). This difference is much more extensive when compared to the 2.0-litre petrol model available in Malaysia.
