JPJ Issues recall for 3,722 Perodua and Honda Motorcycle over deadlight and ABS Issues

KUALA LUMPUR:  The Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) has announced a recall affecting 3,722 vehicles, including Perodua's Alza and Aruz models, as well as the Honda CB350R motorcycle, due to safety concerns with the headlight settings and anti-lock braking system (ABS).

  • In a statement reported by Sinar Harian, JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli explained that the recall addresses an issue with the headlight height alignment on 2,518 units of the Perodua Alza, specifically models equipped with the 1500 X, 1500 H, and 1500 AV CVT transmissions.

The recall also includes 1,139 units of the Perodua Aruz, in both the 1500 X and 1500 AV variants. According to the JPJ, the headlight settings on these models do not comply with current regulations, potentially affecting visibility and safety.

The LED headlights on both the Perodua Alza and Aruz are designed to provide bright, clear illumination that enhances driver visibility, particularly in low-light or nighttime conditions.

These headlights come with advanced features like the follow-me-home function, which keeps the lights on temporarily after the car is locked, allowing drivers and passengers to navigate dark environments safely.

However, LED headlights require precise alignment to meet regulatory standards and ensure they do not cause glare for oncoming drivers.

In the recall affecting both models, the issue centers around the headlight height alignment, which does not comply with specific safety regulations. Misaligned headlights can cause several hazards

Additionally, Datuk Aedy noted that 65 Honda CB350RS motorcycles are affected due to a problem with the wheel speed sensor.

This defect can impact key safety features, such as the ABS, traction control, and the accuracy of the speedometer, all of which are essential for safe riding.

ABS on a motorcycle prevents the wheels from locking up during braking, helping the rider maintain control and avoid skidding. Sensors monitor each wheel's speed, and if a wheel is about to lock, the ABS system reduces and reapplies brake pressure rapidly.

This pulsing effect allows the wheel to keep rolling, maintaining traction and stability, especially useful on slippery or uneven surfaces.

“Any affected components will be replaced free of charge, with costs fully covered by Perodua Manufacturing Sdn Bhd and Boon Siew Honda Sdn Bhd,” Datuk Aedy assured.

He emphasized that Perodua and Boon Siew Honda are reaching out to all affected vehicle owners to schedule inspection slots at service centers nationwide.

Owners also have the option to walk in for an inspection at any authorized service center.

Vehicle owners are encouraged to plan for these inspections as soon as possible to ensure their vehicles meet safety standards.

For additional information, Perodua owners may contact the helpline at 1-800-88-6600 or visit the U-First website at https://www.ufirst.com.my/member/login. Honda CB350R owners can reach Boon Siew Honda at 1-800-88-3993.

JPJ urges all affected vehicle owners to act promptly to complete the recall and ensure their vehicles are safe on the road.
