Is Myvi worth the hype and money?
Perodua is one of Malaysia’s largest car manufacturers. It has a strong presence and network in the country which is one of the reasons why it sells more cars than its competitors. To give you an idea, Perodua recorded the highest ever annual car sales in 2019 selling a total of 240,341 units and claiming a whopping 40 percent of Malaysia’s car market. And guess what? Topping its sales charts was none other than Perodua Myvi.
Perodua Myvi, a car that has been around for many years now, falls in the B-segment hatchback category and has a price range of RM 42,790 - RM 54,090. It faces rivalry from cars like Kia Picanto and Proton Iriz. However, they aren’t as popular as the Myvi. But why is it so and is Myvi’s actually worth all the hype and money? Let’s find out.
Balanced Looks
Wouldn’t you agree that most of the cars that come out these days are inclined more towards the sporty side? Whether it is the looks, design, or interior, manufacturers try to make everything as sporty as possible. Perhaps, that’s what trending. However, Perodua decided to take a step back.
We aren’t saying that Myvi isn’t sporty. It is. Features like LED headlamps, front bumper with skirting, side skirting, alloy wheels, rear spoiler, leather-wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel, etc. indeed make it a sporty-looking car but not too much. The level of sportiness is limited to an extent which allows the car to appeal to a wider spectrum of audience.
Practicality
Since Perodua is a Malaysian brand, it knows the market inside out. It knows what people want and what they look for in a car. And it has implemented this knowledge in all of its cars. The Myvi comes with many such practical features, like-
- Built-in toll reader
- Smart Entry with Smart Key
- 'Smart Link' (For Android Only)
- 277L Boot Space
- Dual-Method Backdoor Unlock (One-touch Button and Remote Control)
- Foldable seats that provide different seating configurations
Apart from these features, the Myvi is also quite spacious and comfortable. All of its occupants get good comfort and support from the seats and there’s enough room for each one of them.
Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV)
Perodua Myvi specs list two engines - 1.3-litre petrol engine that puts out 94 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 121 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox. And then we have a more powerful and bigger 1.5-litre engine that churns out 106 bhp of max power at 6,000 rpm and 140 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. This one gets only the 4-speed automatic gearbox. Perodua says that both the engines are EEV engines that work with low noise and vibration levels and provide exceptional fuel efficiency.
In fact, Perodua has equipped the Myvi with the Eco Idle System which automatically stops the engine when the car is idle and restarts upon release of the brake, thereby reducing consumption and emissions. Perodua claims that the 1.3L engine is capable of returning 21.1 km to a litre whereas the 1.5L engine would give a mileage of 20.1 km/l.
No-nonsense Safety
Surprisingly, Myvi does a pretty solid job when it comes to safety. It has a perfect 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.
Some of its key safety features are-
- 6 airbags
- Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)
- Traction Control (TRC)
- Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake
- Distribution (EBD)
- Hill-Start Assist (HSA)**
- Emergency Stop Signal (ESS)
- Front Corner Sensors
- Reverse sensors and camera
Perodua has also installed its own Advanced Safety Assist (ASA) safety feature that includes Pre-Collision Warning, Pre-Collision Braking, Front Departure Alert, and Pedal Misoperation Control.
Verdict
With the Myvi, Perodua has provided a complete package to the masses. Yes, it isn’t as sporty-looking as some of the other cars out there in the market but it sure is very practical. It also impresses us with its convenient and safety features. Perodua Myvi price for its range-topping model is RM 54,090, and that’s a pretty good deal. It is definitely worth the money and perhaps that’s what the hype is all about.
