Indonesia gets the new Toyota Avanza, Veloz with significant upgrades
KUALA LUMPUR: Toyota Indonesia has finally pulled the wraps off the all-new third-generation Avanza and its sportier version called Veloz. The refreshed Toyota MPVs are based on a new platform and feature significant cosmetic tweaks inside out along with the tech updates. Let’s dive into the details.

While the 2021 Toyota Avanza and Veloz share the same platform, they are significantly different in terms of styling and features, the latter is sportier and has more bits.The new Avanza and Veloz underpin the Daihatsu New Global Architecture on which our Perodua Ativa is also based. The new unibody platform has a front-wheel-drive system replacing the earlier rear-wheel-drive. It also brought major changes to the MPVs dimensions. The new model is 205 mm longer and 70 mm wider with a larger wheelbase of 95 mm.
While the 2021 Toyota Avanza and Veloz share the same platform, they are significantly different in terms of styling and features, the latter is sportier and has more bits.
The Avanza features a revamped two-slat grille, new LED headlights and tail lights, and 15-inch alloy wheels (16-inch in top-spec). The Veloz, on the other hand, sports a unique honeycomb-like front grille teamed up with a different pair of LED headlights, full-width LED tail lights, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the Avanza gets a redesigned dashboard with a floating 7.0-inch infotainment system as standard; higher-spec versions are fitted with a 9.0-inch unit. Other features include Long Sofa Mode for the rear seats, a 4.2-inch TFT display, and a push-button start. On the contrary, the Toyota Veloz is equipped with a 9.0-inch infotainment unit with a rear entertainment system, a 7-inch digital instrument panel, new air-conditioning, leather-wrapped steering wheel, two-tone black and white finishing, fabric-leather upholstery, LED ambient lighting, and wireless smartphone charging pad.
As for safety, the top-spec Avanza and Veloz both come with the Toyota Safety Sense suite of safety and driver-assist systems.
Toyota offers the new Avanza in two engine options - a 1.3-litre in-line-four generating a maximum power output of 97 hp and a peak torque of 122 Nm and a 1.5-litre unit good for making 105 hp and 137 Nm. Included in the gearbox choices are a five-speed manual transmission and a CVT that sends power to the vehicle’s front wheels. Unlike the Avanza, the Veloz comes with a 1.5-litre engine only.
