Here’s Mercedes-AMG's long-awaited hypercar, the AMG One

KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes-AMG has finally revealed its most anticipated offering yet, the AMG One. It is essentially a Formula 1 car for the road!

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What powers the Merceds-AMG One hypercar?

the AMG One is powered by the same engine that was used in Lewis Hamilton’s F1 car, the 1.6-litre turbo hybrid V6 mill.
  • How much does the AMG One weighs?

Weighing just 1,695 kg, the AMG One showcases several lightweight concepts.
  • “Over the duration of the development period, many may have thought that the project would be impossible to implement,” said AMG boss Philipp Schiemer. He added, “Nevertheless, the teams in Affalterbach and the UK never gave up and believed in themselves. To put such a hypercar on wheels is certainly unique.”

Unlike the Formula 1-based hypercars we have seen in the past, this one is not just ‘inspired’ but actually use the same tech as the track-ready F1 car. For instance, the AMG One is powered by the same engine that was used in Lewis Hamilton’s F1 car, the 1.6-litre turbo hybrid V6 mill, and MGU-H.

Let’s now elaborate on both of the above-mentioned F1 borrowed elements in detail, starting with the powerplant.

Mercedes-AMG has worked with the F1 team at Brixworth to build this turbo hybrid V6 unit that comprises four e-motors (two driving the front wheel, one on the turbo, and one on the engine).
The V6 is mounted in the middle and is said to rev faster than the naturally aspirated V8, thanks to an F1-derived raft.

Further, the car revs to 11,000 rpm thanks to the electric fitting instead of mechanical. For instance, it gets electrified pneumatic valve springs, turbo, and spur gear controlling the cam.

As for the MGU-H, it harvests the excess exhaust gas and either feeds it straight into the electrified front axle or stores it in the battery.

Together, the engine, electric motors, MGU-K, and MGU-H, generate a maximum power output of 1,048 bhp. As for the torque, the automaker didn’t give any figure saying it couldn't be derived due to the ‘complex drivetrain’.

The drive is sent to the ground via a specially developed seven-speed automatic manual gearbox. It is lightweight and like the powertrain is bolted directly onto the carbon fiber monocoque.

Weighing just 1,695 kg, the AMG One showcases several lightweight concepts. Moreover, it gets a special coolant that ensures optimal temperature at all times.
