GWM Malaysia previews the Tank 300; launch confirmed for Q3 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: Great Wall Motors is gearing up to introduce a hardcore off-road SUV in Malaysia, called the Tank 300. It hails from the company’s sub-brand Tank based on the concept of "toughness and tenderness". 

The Tank 300 launch in Malaysia is earmarked for the third quarter of 2024, but ahead of that, the Chinese automaker recently gave us a full preview of what Malaysians can expect from this exceptional luxury SUV.

The Tank 300 features a robust build, sophisticated design, and advanced technological amenities, making it an exceptional choice for those seeking both luxury and performance in an SUV. However, details regarding variants and estimated pricing of the local-spec model are currently under wraps. Similarly, the comprehensive spec sheet is also kept confidential at the moment.

The Tank 300 boasts a retro-style boxy exterior design reminiscent of the Jeep Wrangler and Suzuki Jimny. It is equipped with a large grille, round LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, and flared wheel arches. The rear dons vertical tail lights and a spare wheel, accentuating the rugged and adventurous aesthetic of the vehicle.

Inside, the upcoming Chinese SUV exudes ruggedness as well as luxury with a chunky steering wheel, a cockpit-inspired Aviation gear lever, and premium bits like dual 12.3-inch interactive screens, wireless phone charger, Harman International Infinity sound system, ventilated seats, ambient lighting, and comfortable seats wrapped in vegan leather.

Under the hood, the Malaysia-spec Tank 300 may be equipped with either a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing 220 PS and 380 Nm or a 2.0-litre turbocharged 48V mild-hybrid system, delivering 245 PS and 380 Nm of torque.

The SUV underpins an off-road chassis with electronically controlled mechanical differential locks on both axles. Also part of the kit is a dual-speed electronic part-time 4WD, nine selectable drive modes (including Normal, Mud/Sand, Pothole, Mountain, Rock, and Creeping) and a “Tank Turn” system reduces the turning radius of the vehicle for easier navigation.

For pricing ideas, we can refer to the Chinese market, where the entry-level Tank 300 retails for CNY 199,800, approximately equal to RM 131k.
