GWM launches the Tank 700 - Budget G-Wagon with 516hp/800Nm, headed to Malaysia?

KUALA LUMPUR: Great Wall Motor has just unveiled its latest foray into the luxury SUV market in China, and launched the Tank 700 Hi4-T plug-in hybrid (PHEV), with a starting price of 428,000 yuan (approximately RM284k).

Blending opulent design with a robust hybrid powertrain and cutting-edge features, the Tank 700 Hi4-T is poised to shake up the luxury vehicle segment in China.

Following numerous teasers and sneak peeks last year in China, the unveiling of this model marks the brand's third plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) offering. Setting itself apart with a robust 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo engine, this model represents a significant leap from the 2-liter, 4-cylinder engines found in its forerunners, introducing a new level of power and performance.

Style-wise, the Tank 700 Hi4-T features the signature Tank design ethos with a striking front fascia and a sleek chrome grill, setting a new standard in aesthetics.

Measuring at 5,113mm in length, 2,061mm in width and 1,952mm in height, the Tank 700 is longer, wider and slightly taller than a LandCruiser and it stands as the largest model within the Tank series, offering ample space and presence.

Inside and as expected, drivers and passengers are treated to a luxurious and premium feeling cabin, boasting an expansive floating LCD screen, Heads-up Display (HUD), and upscale touches like suede leather roof and a premium 1,600W Harman Kardon audio system, enhancing the overall driving enjoyment.

Additional luxuries include advanced ventilation and heating options, alongside a 141° electrically adjustable rear seat, prioritizing passenger comfort.

Mechanically, the Tank 700 Hi4-T is powered by a formidable 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo engine paired with an electric motor and a 9-speed automatic transmission, generating a hefty 516hp and 800Nm of torque.

The vehicle features a high-capacity ternary (NMC) battery from SVOLT, ensuring an all-electric range of up to 100 kilometers, underlining its efficiency and power.

Notably, the Tank 700 is also offered as an ICE vehicle, following its reveal last year.

Starting at 428,000 yuan (RM283,997), the Tank 700 Hi4-T is now available for those looking to indulge in luxury and performance. 

Given that GWM Malaysia extended invitations to several Malaysian media outlets for the launch in China and also streamed the event live on their official Malaysian social media channels, it sparks speculation that the Tank 700 might be gearing up for a Malaysian debut soon.

Should this be the case, it's poised to become a compelling budget-friendly rival to the iconic Mercedes G-Class. The resemblance in design elements between the Tank 700 and the legendary German 4x4 is unmistakable and hard to overlook, making it an intriguing prospect for enthusiasts and consumers alike.
