Chery Tiggo 9 PHEV unveiled - Launching this year, 1,400km range

KUALA LUMPUR: Chery is continuing its dynamic streak in the electric vehicle sector, showcasing this momentum at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition with the unveiling of the Tiggo 9 PHEV.

Embracing this year's theme, "New Energy, New Eco, New Era," the launch highlights Chery's steadfast commitment to incorporating innovative energy solutions into their expanding lineup.

The Tiggo 9 PHEV represents the latest expansion of the Tiggo family, which has been part of Chery's portfolio since the introduction of their first SUV model in 2005. The brand's evolution was highlighted during the show, emphasizing its commitment to "Conquer with you, Guard for Love," a slogan that encapsulates the brand’s aim to combine performance with safety and environmental consciousness.

At the event, Zhu Shaodong, CEO of CHERY International BG, reflected on the Tiggo family's journey over the past two decades, highlighting the series' global recognition for quality, performance, and design. The Tiggo 9 PHEV, as Zhu noted, is targeted at families who value both career advancement and family welfare, embodying the Tiggo family’s spirit.

The SUV's design draws from the "Conquer" and "Guard" themes, evident in its robust exterior features like the octagonal grille and dynamic body lines, and a secure, technologically advanced interior that includes a 15.6-inch HD screen and specially designed 3D stitched seats.

In terms of dimensions, the Tiggo 9 measures 4,810 mm in length, The Tiggo 9 boasts dimensions of 4,810 mm in length, 1,925 mm in width, and 1,741 mm in height, marking a significant increase in size compared to the already sizable Tiggo 8 Pro. This makes it noticeably longer, wider, and taller, enhancing its substantial presence when compared to its handsome smaller brother.

Performance-wise, the Tiggo 9 PHEV is equipped with a 2.0T high-performance engine linked to an 8-speed automatic transmission, promising powerful yet efficient driving with a minimum fuel consumption of just 5.2 liters per 100 kilometers under the WLTC cycle. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers 235 hp and 385 Nm of torque, complemented by an electric motor that produces an additional 221 hp.

A standout feature of the Tiggo 9 PHEV is its super hybrid DHT system. This system combines a 221 hp electric motor with the traditional engine to enhance acceleration and extend the vehicle's range to over 1400 kilometers, addressing common concerns about electric vehicle range limitations.

As the show concluded its first day, the Tiggo 9 PHEV had already drawn significant attention, showcasing Chery’s commitment to innovation and its proactive approach to new energy technologies.

Set for release in the fourth quarter of 2024, the Chery Tiggo 9 PHEV will be launched alongside its pure internal combustion engine counterparts. This dual release strategy positions Chery to revolutionize luxury SUV standards with cutting-edge technology in both its fuel and PHEV versions of the Tiggo 9.

Will this be Chery's first PHEV in Malaysia? Only time will tell, but we wouldn't put it past  them as their expansion globally and in Malaysia looks daring.
