Chery Omoda 7 shows off impressive performance in extreme heat test

KUALA LUMPUR: Chery unveiled a stylish and sporty urban-centric SUV, the Omoda 7, at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show held in April this year. The SUV is currently undergoing rigorous testing and astonishing everyone with its outstanding performance.

Shawn Xu, the international CEO of Omoda and Jaecoo, recently demonstrated the Omoda 7’s capabilities by conducting six acceleration sprints in the scorching heat, with temperatures exceeding 76℃. Despite the extreme conditions, the Omoda 7 went from 0 to 100 kmph in an average of 8.0 seconds, outperforming the official benchmark of 8.4 seconds. The vehicle completes the century sprint in just 7.85 seconds in peak conditions.

“This result directly confirms that OMODA 7 can still maintain non-attenuated power output as well as a stable and reliable performance under high-temperature conditions,” said Xu. It is a critical factor for evaluating new energy vehicles' engine efficiency.

“The high-temperature endurance test is just the beginning. The OMODA 7 will soon undergo further rigorous evaluations, including assessments of its pure electric cruising range and fuel consumption under power loss conditions in high temperatures. These upcoming tests aim to address mileage concerns and advance the development of efficient and eco-friendly solutions for new energy vehicles,” he added.

As a quick recap, the Chery Omoda 7 is a C-segment hybrid SUV that sits above the Omoda 5 in the brand’s lineup. It measures  4,621 mm in length, 1,872 mm in width, and 1,673 mm in height and spans a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. 

The SUV is powered by a plug-in hybrid system combining a 156 PS/220 Nm 1.5TGDi four-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor, and a lithium-ion battery pack. The setup offers an exceptional thermal efficiency of 44.5% and an impressive fuel consumption of 20.5 kmpl (in hybrid mode), claims Chery.

The eye-catching exterior design features a bold and commanding front fascia with a borderless parametric grille and illuminating hexagonal patterns on the corners. With a coupe-like silhouette, the SUV has a prominent kink over the rear fender. The tail lights feature an "electric energy design" with a series of connecting arrows.

The welcoming interior is fitted with an innovative sliding 15.6-inch centre touchscreen, 12+2 Sony speaker sound system from Sony, Intelligent Fragrance System, Nubuck leather upholstery, and Panoramic sunroof. The car also incorporates gaming-inspired elements such as a steering wheel styled to resemble a PlayStation 5 controller and front seats designed to look like gaming chairs.

The Omoda 7 also comes with a comprehensive ADAS package, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, and other advanced driving assistance gears.
